Hey guys so I have an interview in a couple of days for a hospital that I am looking to volunteer at over the summer. So I was just wondering, is this a formal interview? Should I wear dress pants, dress shoes, shirt & tie? Or instead of the shirt & tie could I just wear a polo?

Are these interviews usually just a formality and do I have the position for sure already? Also any ideas what q's they might ask me other than 'why do you want to volunteer'?

Business casual is probably the way to go - slacks and a button down or polo. No need for a tie. You'll probably have to wear something similar when you volunteer (when I volunteered in a peds ER, there was a no denim policy).

It's hard to know how much of a formality the interview is, but definitely don't assume it's a sure thing. Just answer the questions politely and express sincere interest in whatever specific type of volunteer work it is and you'll be fine. Good luck!

For MOST cases (not necessarily medical school), a good rule of thumb is to dress one "level" above what the office dress code is.

Exception: if the office dress code is business professional, this does not indicate a tuxedo dress code for the interview.

I wore dress pants, nice shirt and tie. It's always good to look nice. It gives a good impression to the volunteer coordinator and staff.

Its better to overdress for an interview than underdress. If you think a polo and kakhi's would be fine, go with at least a dress shrit and pants.

As a rule of thumb its better to over-dress than under-dress, but keep in mind that wearing a suit to a volunteer interview may look a little "off"- Its still a far cry from a formal job interview and will be a bit more relaxed. Check the organization's website and dress a step-up from their required uniform. I wore business casual to mine: a nice button-down and slacks, otherwise a step up from the polo shirt and khakis their volunteers wear.

Be sure to look professional and well-groomed, but also "friendly" - the hospital isn't interested in your skills so much as your ability to be courteous, pleasant, and socially appropriate with patients and their families.

i've always went casual to volunteer interviews..
