Hey!

I am a Psychology major, and I am asisting in research in psychology. Basically, I am not the researcher but I am helping with the research process: getting data from participants and recording data. Also, I'm not being paid to do this I'm volunteering.

Since it is not my own study and I am just assisting, does this add any value to my application?

It is worth something on your app. You may not be the lead researcher, but you are learning the ins and outs of research. You are probably learning how to be ethical, collect and manage data, review research, and work in a team.

Definitely isn't useless; I actually conducted legal research and Economics and I'm putting it on my application this summer (Don't think it could hurt.) It helped me gain critical thinking skills, passion for knowledge (regardless of type), and something interesting that most pre-dental schools don't have the opportunity to gain (if pre-law students.) Overall, any type of research I think is helpful - never useless; it shows that you are not only productive within a class, but also outside of class. I could go on and on, but I'll stop. haha.

I did the same thing in college (psych research assistant), and from what I remember all of the admission committees loved it. Not only is it something different but it was something I enjoyed and that showed when I was asked about it.

What do you think of other social science research. I worked on some communication and sociology projects... any thoughts?
