Hello,
I am a 5th year pharmacy student with intern permit in New York.
I have never worked in a pharmacy, which I guess is pretty unusual for pharmacy students.

Here goes my story,
I recently applied to one of the chain pharmacy in NYC. As I really wanted to start my intern job, I was very thrilled when they wanted me to come back to sign some papers.

Since they didn't mention the pay rate, I presumed it to be somewhere between 11/hr-18/hr or that I may have time to discuss it separately with the manager at the orientation;

However, when I came home and read through some papers they gave me, I realized my pay rate is NYC minimum wage, which is 7.25/hr

Is this normal for pharmacy interns with intern permit under any circumstances? Would it be unreasonable to talk to the manager regarding this matter?

I appreciate any opinion. Thank you! 🙂

What company? Interns should be paid more...

That's exactly what I think. Even though I have no pharmacy-related experience, I should deserve more than a minimum wage. It's K-mart pharmacy by the way.

Check to see if there's some initial training that needs to be done for your pay increase. If i remember correctly, at CVS you have to go through the tech training and intern training in order to get your correct class level pay. Might be the same at Kmart.

Every job I ever had is above that..........

I have never seen a company pay the minimum wage before. Its too low to be at a subsistance level.

I have seen this at the chain where I work (not Kmart). The interns I work with started at tech wage last year (P2), which is around minimum wage. Eventually they got up to intern pay about 6 months later, and the difference was paid back to them. I have no idea why this company does this. Talk to your PDM about whether they will bump up your pay or give you back pay when they do this.

I have also seen the chain file a guy's paperwork incorrectly, so he worked on tech pay for a while because of this. Eventually they gave him most or all of the difference back.

That seems kind of low, I would seek employment elsewhere or at least talk to your pharmacy manager and find out if there is something going on you don't know about. I have not seen anyone make less than 11.00/hr as 1st year intern, you should be at close to 14.00/hr as a 4/5th year student.

Somebody messed up. Kmart pays interns based on school year (at least my district does). The summer after P1 (right after I got my intern permit) I was making 12.50/hr. Kmart is surprisingly a very nice place for pharmacy; you don't really get a whole lot of corporate BS and the store management leaves you to do your business. Good luck.

thank you for your advices everyone!! I found out that there was a mistake in the process.
Thank you again!!! =D

My 1st job 10 years ago i made $6/hr doing hard labor.. now i make > $50/hr sitting in a cushion chair... pharmacy was a good choice...

Don't sign anything until you discuss wage... its not rude, its expected

not to be a douche, but "advices" is most definitely a word. Just not normally used.
