Hi guys,

I am planning to attend a detnal school next year and I was wondering if it is possible to have a part time job (20hrs/week) while I am am going to detnal school. I am planning to get good grades, since I might want to go to speciality.

Thanks

Hey Balance,

I don't know about the last three years, but I don't think it's a good idea to work at least your first year of dental school. I would suppose it's probably not a good idea after. The exception would be that in some states (MA) specifically that dental students can sit in on the dental hygiene exams. Then they can work as hygienists during their 3rd and 4th year.

i just had a discussion with my boss today where he told me that he had to work his own way through both undergrad and dental school with no outside financial support. today he is a very successful specialist. I would not recommend trying it if there is any way not to, but don't let anyone tell you it isn't possible.

I worked some real idiot jobs. One was the night shift at a gas station. I did it because it isolated me in a room with very few distractions. Most of the time there was less then four costumers per hour. A few times, I would get piss at the costumers for disturbing my studying. The job was good. I worked full time as studied full time and did extremely will in my course. Possibly I could find some thing similar for Dental school.

Kinda off subject, but I heard that was one of the most dangerous jobs (statistically speaking)

I heard of a practice in Newton,MA where the more routine procedures (like cleaning) they would hire dental students to do.

My father had to work his way through dental school but only because the loans weren't available back then as they are today. With the govenment being more than willing to lend the money you should take it. If you are planning to specialize I would say 20 hrs/week would pretty much kill you. You might be able to pull it off and keep decent grades but you would be hard pressed to pull top 10%. Why would you want a part time job anyways?

what you forget thaxil is that dental school is not under grad. besides, whats another 10-15 thousand/yr in loans when you borrow 50?

O-gees, I forgot, dental school is not under grad. How silly of me 🙄 So, what is your point? 10- 15 thousand is just that, 10 to 15 thousand; a whole lot of money from where I am from. Any ways, if I do such a thing and it conflicts with my studies, I will drop it in an instant. Nothing is certain now, I have not even started D-school to get a feel of what is possible.

Critterbug,

You do not even need to tell me. One time (another horror story) I had four guys rushed into the store, two of which had handguns. The two handguns where pointed directly at my head while I was call all kind of offensive names. One jumped over counter and to collect the $200 in the till, and the other grab some chip and said he was hunger. As if I was going to say, ?your are going to have to pay for those chip?. When the ordeal was over, I called the police who arrive 30 mins later, and then questioned me as if I was in on the robbery. What a bunch of @ssholes. I quit the next week, needless to say.

thaxil,
i didn't mean to imply anything negative. what i meant to say was that i think you could live off of 10-15 thousand loan (on top of your tuition loans). when comparing what you will owe at the end of your dental education, an extra 10/yr will not kill you to borrow.

i myself have always worked my whole life and the thought of having my fiance work alone and be the sole supporter has been killing me. i can't even stand the thought of depending on a woman to provide for me, but thats the reality. i know and she knows that the best thing to do for us students at this point is to just focus on our studies and do the best we could. but then again, thats just me.

if yo uthink you would be able to handle the pressure then by all means go ahead and work while in dental school. at least you'd save 40 000 during the whole 4 years.

p.s. i hope you aren't a Laker fan. i'd hate to be you in Detroit right about now. lol

I have no problem with depending on my wife for financial support. She wants to have her own career as well. She is almost done with her masters in education and there seems to be more opportunity in Detroit then here were fast food is the only industry. In fact, McDonald originated here as well as Taco Bell. She knows we are working together and has no problem paying some of my tuition when possible.

As for the Lakers and Pistons, I have no preference. I do not watch NBA. I think it is a showoff sport full of pansies, who complain and cry about every little violation. But, I tell people I am moving to Detroit because Lakers suck.:meanie:
