One of my parents went to med school at a school I'm applying to but had to transfer after MS2 year to a school closer to home for family reasons. He's talked to me about the unique location and patient population a ton. Would it be a red flag to say that this is a small part of a larger reason for me wanting to attend this school and serve that same population? Is transferring seen as a bad thing in the med school world?

It would just be one or two sentences at the end of my "Why us." I have other really strong reasons too

I don’t understand

Are u contemplating including the bit about patient population demographic or the fact that ur dad transferred?

The part about my dad transferring out. The patient population demographic is part of my "why us" essay already.

It is really, really unusual to transfer out. Almost unheard of.

The fact that your father attended but transferred is not relevant to your admission. In fact, I think it would be a distraction as his transfer to another school would be so interesting that your own application would be a side thought.

How long ago was this transfer? You aren't going to be a legacy, but assuming he transferred in good standing, then (I agree with @LizzyM) faculty will just chase the other shiny ball (does anyone remember this person's father?). Now this assumes he NEVER had contact with anyone associated with this medical school in the interim years. Medicine can surprisingly be a small world.

Don't mention it, best case scenario they don't care, but more likely than not it will hurt you
