Since freshman year in high school I've been doing lots of mangerial work for my parents. When i went to college (2 hours away from home) I knew this would become a problem but instead what my dad does now is he sends me the payroll every week on excel and makes me chart it all and write checks, etc. and then first class them back to him. In terms of work it's basically like adding a pain in the ass 4 credit class to my schedule but I know I have to do it. I don't get paid for this but I don't care since my parents paid 20k a year from 5-12 grade, and about 12k a year now, and then who knows what in med school. Anyways my point is can I write somethign like this in an application? If I was never paid for it and since it is for my parents do I even have the right to say it's a job? Any suggestions/comments would be nice. Thanks.

yes. as far as finacial aid goes it's better that you not get paid.

well i don't think financial aid is the issue because my parents are paying for my education and they won't qualify for financial aid. but in terms of an extra curric or whatever should i list this?

You can list it; much better to be doing something than nothing. Don't feel like it's going to be a big qualifier though, unless it's healthcare experience, doing "odd jobs" for your parents probably doesn't compare to a "real" job (I understand you probably work as hard doing this as anything else, but that's just how it looks). If you want to get some work experience, try getting a part time or volunteer position in a healthcare field. Just a month or two could really help you to gain perspective.

thanks supadupafly. would it be wrong to state the job that i do but not mention that it is for my parents? the reason i ask this is because i know that i am working hard and it's basically like having a part time job where i have deadlines that aren't affected just because i work for my parents.

also i know this isn't a big deal in my overall application but it means something to me and I just don't want it to not get the attention it deserves simply because it's "for my parents"

Could you maybe just have you're parnents give you some sort of job title...and just not say that it was unpaid.....just a part time job...

you know....something like part time buisness manager for XXX

Just a thought.

yeah that's an option...but in all of my college applications i was asked to state what my parents do for a living so i can't write that i am part time business manager for XXX and then in my application have XXX be what my parents own....i mean i could do that but i know that anyone that reads i work for my parents will think "oh damn this kid has it easy".

AMCAS requires a contact name. I did some summer volunteer work for my dad & listed him. It was fine. It wouldn't have been fine if it was one of only a few experiences. If you don't have substantial experience doing soething volunteer or healthcare related, nows the time to get some. It's not hard. I did >100 hours of shadowing in the three months before filing AMCAS. This impressed several interviewers, and without doubt has helped me gain acceptance.

yeah every semester i volunteer about 60 hours (is that a good amount?) and i plan on shadowing a doctor this summer but i first gotta figure out who.

does the AMCAS/secondaries ask how many hours you volunteered in a particular place? should be keeping track of that? each semester i volunteer in a different department of the same hospital so would i just write that down as one giant volunteering experience or do i mention each specific department (cardiology, telemetry, oncology, etc.)?
