is this too controversial?

Not sure you want to go to a school that is willing to reject you for your religion! If you are worried, make it more heavily about medicine than your religion, but most schools will, later on, ask for a statement on how you bring diversity to the school on the secondary, so an uncommon religion probably won't count against you.

I think you can write a nice statement with your material. Keep an eye on your tone and focus during writing. Make sure it doesn't become a paper about your religion - keep it on medicine. Also, make sure your tone is non-judgemental when you write. De-emphasize the religion and stay focused on what you learned and how it brought you to "why medicine."

This shouldn't be contreversial at all if you do it right. Best of luck.

in my ps, can i talk about how values I learned from my religion growing up made me want to go into medicine? and then i discuss the specific experiences that helped me make that decision... or that too controversial? i'm from a minority religion so i'm scared it might be looked down upon if someone hasn't heard of it
Many religions place an emphasis on service to others. Hence, you're fine.

Do keep in mind people will inject their own biases when reading the thing. Including such a motivation opens up the door to people prodding you about it or judging you for it.

You should be fine! No shame in using your religion as the reason for what guides you to medicine. As long as it's honest and compelling, I say go for it! 🙂
