I'm currently in my last year at a community college and my school is offering a dual course for organic chemistry 1 & 2. I've taken Chemistry 1, but not Chemistry 2. The summer is the only time that they are offering it, and this is my last year at this college before I transfer to a 4-year university. I don't work, so I know that I will have enough time to study. Should I take it? Would it be too risky? What do you think? 😕

You should take O-Chem at community college. I also did a summer O-Chem at my community college before transfering to a 4-year and I got accepted to two top ten medical schools. So, it will probably help you in the long run.

Most people say that you're putting yourself at a disadvantage if you take too many pre-reqs at a community college, so be aware of that. If you are worried that you don't have enough chemistry background taking Ochem w/o having taken Chem2, no need to worry. They are completely different, and they are almost 100% irrespective of eachother when learning it in the classroom. You also might want to find out how difficult Ochem is at the 4 year university you will be transfering to - that might make your decision a bit easier.

The real benefit of taking summer O-Chem is that it frees up your schedule for the year at a 4-year university. You can take upper level biology or chemistry classes at the university if you want. Anyway, for me it was a real time saver to cram a years worth of O-chem into one summer.

Personally, I would take it at the 4-year university for three main reasons.
1- shows you can handle a difficult courseload successfully- if you organic only over the summer it only shows you could buckle down in one class

2- Orgo is seen as a "big deal" class to some admissions committees so taking it at a more credible school would be smart.

3- Organic sucks. I would rather do it during the year and not rush through it in one summer.

I know it would be cheaper, likely easier, and more manageable time-wise to take it at a CC, but this is my point of view...
