Is it true that NYU is famous for flunking students after the first year? I would appreciate it if anybody who has info. would let me know if that is true or not because I don't want to risk going there and then having to fail on the second year!!:scared:

thats weird, ive heard this before too. Although im not sure if its a rumor or what.
I think theres always a chance of failing out, i dont think they purposley make people fail out though. Maybe some people just get to dental school and realize its the wrong profession for them, its much more work than they expected and cant keep up, so they themselves fail out.
My mentor is a student at penn dental and he told me about 4 people "failed/left" after the first year. & He said 2 ppl decided medicine was more of what they wanted to do and ended up leaving dent school for med school.
I think the failure depends on the person not on the school.
also, why would they fail you? they wouldnt want to lose that tuition money...a good 60 gs?

I agree with molar3.

When I went to the interview to NYU, the students have told me that when a person is close to failing, then academic dean and some other professors try to help you out; they are concerned about you and try to help you NOT to fail. I think b/c the student pool is so big, they just tend to have more people who fail/leave.

plus, their board passing rate this year was 100%. i think they're doing a pretty good job trying to make students achieve their goals in becoming dentists.

ohhhh **** you, is this asshat rumor still around 👎

When I was at NYU, Dr. Meijia said that you are contacted by the deans if you score below the class average on the exams.

In terms of failing people, that rumor is not true. I think NYU does their best to help their students out if they are falling behind.

It's bad for NYUs attrition rate if they don't.

They can't just flunk you for no reason! They'll probably do that if you have a horrible performance. In that case, it really doesn't matter where you go; you'll drop out anyways regardless of the school.

If you work hard and really want it you're not going to fail. Some people fail because they didn't work hard or didn't really want it. Put this NYU failing rumor to REST Dear god!. There are so many threads on this already...some dating back to 2002....and comments always point that this is just a rumor.....SO WHY are you bringing it up again sheesh. No school wants people to fail purposely common sense man common sense! 😡

why don't you and the other who got mad CALM DOWN!! it was just a question, I didn't say NYU is a bad school or anything..the purpose of this site is to get help and get things cleared up!!!!

I have a friend in third year at NYU. Asked her about this rumor not long ago, and she said that this rumor is definitely true. She had few classmates that have been kicked out. But, I've also heard that they do try to help you out.

if you put it that way, then it's all the same for ALL dental schools. all dental schools will ask the student to leave if they keep failing their courses. i've seen it happen in other dental schools; if you keep failing even after the help they provide you, of course you will end up leaving the school. i'm sure NYU just has more students since their student pool is 4-5 times larger than the other dental schools.

I am calm😀...but there are so many threads on this same subject that you could have done a quick search for it and didn't have to make another thread about it and hence bringing up the rumor again/dragging on its existence.

My interviewer confirmed this rumor when I asked him about it, but he tried reassuring me by saying that I "wouldn't have to worry about it" with my stats.

No school out there purposely tries to fail their students. Otherwise they'd be losing a couple years worth of tuition. Dental school is just hard, plain and simple. Some folks just aren't cut out for dental school.

Okay, I still have no idea if this is true or not. Most say it's just a rumor. But then someone, like on this thread, will pop up and say that is is true. Will someone who goes to NYU just get on here and say if it's true or not? And what exactly IT is we are talking about? Is it just students failing out like all dental schools or NYU forcing students out?

Im obviously not a student there. but I think the general consensus is that it is true that NYU kicks out students...but these are students who failed courses and NYu does offer help. However there is a difference between NYU forcibly kicking out students (rumor) and students failing out(true, but this is true at every D school). It would be ridiculous to think NYU purposely wants you to fail but it is true that some students (AT every school mind you!!) don't make it through dental school and NYU may have a higher number of those students for obvious reasons aka 3x the class size of other schools. So ya i think that is really all it is...

I think the question might be more along the lines of do they have built in attrition? Do they accept 200 for example, then cut it down to 100 after first year. These numbers are just as an example. I have heard this rumor about NYU as well. Every school kicks out students that aren't passing, but what I have heard is that the bottom X % gets the boot regardless if they are passing or not. Sounds kinda harsh, but that's the word on the street.

That's the impression I had after walking out of my interview.

This is true. I'm a D1 and after the first semester the ones who aren't super-hot get booted. Cause they failed aesthetics.

They seem to council everyone who is in jeopardy of failing, but I've heard many leave on their own accord too (ie: they cant deal with stress, admitted to state school during first few weeks, dont like dental school, etc). They did have a 100% passing rate on the board exams, which means that they are doing something right, and thats pretty significant considering there are 200+ students in the class.

Bump

Any NYU students can confirm this?

Dr. Vogel addressed this rumor at our interview and said that if so many people failed, they would lose accreditation. Also, they give people who struggle chances to re-mediate (they even follow up with it to make sure you're doing your remediation stuff, and you have appointments with counselors..etc.). If you can't pass it after that, then no offense, you're probably not cut out for dentistry at NYU or any school.

The old NYU from 15 years ago and earlier would flunk their students. Thus the thinking was to accept a whole bunch of applicants and remove the ones who couldn't hack it after Year 1. Now the approach is to be more selective and accept those who can handle the program. Thus you don't have to worry about flunking out unless, of course, you're a dumb idiot and have no business going to dental school.
