I have a volunteering "tutoring" thing sort of privately that I do. It started when a couple HS friends asked me for help in some math and science work but I've sort of expanded that to voluntarily offering my tutoring around my neighborhood (I commute). I've started this for about 6 months ago and was wondering whether or not to list this as a volunteering EC (or any EC) on med school apps? It's very unofficial and sort of like a pastime to me helping friends locally, but maybe it could count as an extracirricular... there are no set timings per week and it varies based on what's available to both me and the person I'm "tutoring" .

Should I list this, and if so what should I list it as? (Tutoring, Volunteer Tutor, Private Volunteer Tutor, etc)

You probably shouldn't bother listing this. It's not like this is a "bad" thing, but since you've only been doing it for <6 months and it's very informal, don't bother. Chalk it up as having had some teaching experience, if that, during an interview.

Not sure if I would include this, it might come across as trying to make something out of nothing. Pretty much everyone helps their friends out with school work.

Since you are helping your friends, I would not consider it a "volunteer" activity (at least, not as it's intended for AMCAS purposes). List it under Teaching or Other, and Name it Neighborhood Tutor (or somesuch). Be sure to have contact information to use for the application. While you could use a long-term tutee for this purpose, since they are friends, you might try to get a parent or school official who can attest to your involvement instead.

How many hours do you tutor? Do you make money?

I included three tutoring experience on my AMCAS that lead me to work in education and run a LLC mini business.
