Hi all,

I am currently enrolled at Cal State Fullerton. After this year, I want to transfer to a UC. I'm applying to UCLA, UCI, and UCR. I wanted to know if UCR was a good school. I don't see many people going there and I always hear people looking down on that school. What do you guys think about UCR?

Each UC was created w/a specific focus (like UC Davis is aggriculture). I'm pretty sure that UCR is for business...

Not that great of a reputation, probably because it's one of the newer campuses.

plus you have to live in riverside...

apply to: UCLA, UCB, UCSD, or UCI. Thats the order.

the school is good.... the teachers are great (especially for upper div classes)... and there is a lot of hands on reserach oppurtunity on campus if u like to get involved in research. the only reason the school is looked down on is cuz of the students who get accepted at ucr. but that has nothing to do with the kind of education that they get....

Although, i dont live in Cali but i do know a lot about the school. The school is great with great education. Students are awesome and some of them are very smart and intelligent. If you want to do good and will put in effort then you will succeed.

their agriculture and biological science programs are good!

Their ESL program is also famous!

Anyway, they do have a UCLA/UCR jointed premedical program, which is very competitive.

The place is good. It's quiet and close from LA. (1hr distance!) 🙂

Ahhhh UCR is the BEST!! Thats where I went. The professors are great, you learn a lot and the area isnt that bad...I feel that UCR prepared me well for dental school. GO TO UCR!!!!!!!!!!

UCR. meh, if you can get into other schools like UCI, UCLA, UCSD, UC Berkeley (not in any order here), I recommending going there. Otherwise, its still a university. I know a few ppl who have gotten into med. school from there. But then again, those friends were top students by themselves.

BTW: OP, I like your name. StarCraft all the way.!

No. horrible school. my best friend is currently a 4th year bio major there rite now and she took some uci summer school classes and she told me of how some of the bio professors aren't really motivated to help the students learn... like they aren't motivated to encourage learning... n she also told me how the bio classes at uci were more challenging and harder than the ones at uci. u kno... ucr is called uc rejects for a reason. :-\ but then again it is a uc. but if u apply n get in to a diff uc go to that one. don't go to ucr. WHOLE bunch of perv's there too n wanna be gansters. -_-;;

my bestie also told me about her bio program... they had liek the WEIRDEST schedule of classes... like u don't take orgo until ur third year or something like that... like the order of all ur science classes for a bio major are really f'ed up and make no sense. but if u want to try for a major other than bio at ucr then go ahead to ucr. they're english program is pretty good from what i hear. 🙂

After hearing all your guy's bad comments about UCR... its still a great school, and you wont know it until you actually go there and experience it for yourself..yah you can go to uci and ucla and all, but that doesnt mean ucr isnt a great school. in a couple of years they will have their own med school and watch then you guys will be praising ucr...

will the med school magically move the college to a new town? until then, I won't be a fan of UCR...

Go to UCR. It's all about GPA. 3.8 at UCR will probably give you better chance at entering dental school than 3.3 at UCB or UCLA.

i have to agree with Bruinlove...

which sucks cuz UCLA is wayyy more competitive than UCR..

hence UCR = University of California Rejects..

my rank?

UCLA> UCB> UCSD> UCI> UCR

but if u go to uci/ucr, def get a 4.0 and u'll have priority over 3.5 uclaers.

hey, thanks for the input guys. i think i'll definitely give UCR a shot if that's the only school i get into. After all, it is a UC and they are loaded with professors with Ph.D's just like any other UCs. well, thanks again!

I went to UCR for a bit. The education you get is pretty good, tougher in some cases than other schools. I personally didn't care to live there. It smells funny ,plus I had my car stolen the second week I lived there. (I lived in a nicer area, gated community w/ security guard!) But overall- I hear they are really research based, which is good if you want the experience. I guess it was just an experience in life......good luck if you go there!👍

it is not easy to get a 3.8 at UCR! try taking the Lower div science classes at UCR.... and u will know how hard it is! UCR is considered UC rejects... its prolly cuz of all the students who go here. (majority of them do lack a brain... but there are quite a lot who are smart and have made the smart decision of going to UCR, and are making use of all the oppurtunities available on this campus).

To the OP... UCR has a wonderful Honors Program and health professions program on campus.... and its just amazing! they have wonderful oppurtunities, amazing staff who will get to know you personally, and will do anything they have to do to help you reach your goal. and make sure you are aware that surviving at UCR is equally or more hard than it is at any other UC campus. and u do have to work really hard for your grade!

Ask your friends little brothers/sisters....chances are they are getting denied to UCSB and getting into Davis and Irvine now when it used to be the other way around.

The 2 Nobel Prizes we won in 2004 catapulted us pretty high and since I entered that year, the competition has increased incredibly its insane now.

Plus we party hard and have the beach view from our apartments 🙂

What's the difference between a person who went to UCR for undergrad and became a dentist, or went to to UCLA undergrad and became a dentist?

At the end... we all will have the same degree... unless you specialize...

From what i have heard and seen about UCR, i completely agree.
Great Post!!!

true, I go to UCLA rite now but it aint matter if you go to UCR or UC Berkeley.
I went to UCLA because I thought it will fit me and the prestige..
but undergrad prestige is nothing....

I disagree, my fellow bruin. Perhaps you haven't had enough experience to realize how much respect our school gets from people, especially in Socal.

i know that UCLA does get lots of respect but that doesn't mean that I have a better chance of getting into D-school... that was my point

It seems that some schools do care about where you received your undergrad education. On my interview day at one school, 90% of interviewees were from well-known schools. (ex> Duke, Columbia)

if it didn't matter, then i wouldn't have gone here and spent that much money on my undergraduate education. uc's are amongst the most respected and highest ranked public universities in the nation. many dental schools see that and give us credit for it. be proud to be a bruin, bleed blue!

Yet you dont have any interviews....

i've actually had one interview.

Add USC right at the beginning, although it is not a UC.

USC, UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UCSB, ......

Now, this is the correct order.

You guys are naive to think that undergrad doesn't make a difference or to think that any undergrad should prepare you for D-school. Schools are ranked and people get denied to some while accepted to others for a reason. Some schools are better than others, and while anyone can become a dentist if they are motivated enough regardless of what school they go, the reality is you have a BETTER chance of getting into a D-school if you go to a respected school with a good reputation. This school has this reputation for reasons, such as academics, curriculum, reputation to grad programs, past students doing well, environment that fosters future growth, etc.

And on a side note, there is no way USC is ranked above all UC's....absolutely no way.

EXACTLY what I was thinking!! 👍

Nothing really official, but just to mention: two of my interviewers mentioned my undergrad(UC) and its reputation as the first thing/conversation starter.

So yes, I believe it has some indirect influence, at least on the perception of the interviewer.

Go to UCR if you want to talk to some down to earth and chill people. People are less competitive and more friendly. Prepare to have ugly girls call you a pervert and wanna be gangster if you mess with them for fun.

IMO any uc is better than cal state.

I have met and know some of the girls from there and they are totally opposite of the description that you are giving.
But definitely the people over there are friendly and very down to earth!!!

This is really the next step in our evolution as a campus," said David H. Warren, UC Riverside executive vice chancellor. "Academic support could be done well on an informal basis for a student population under 10,000, but it becomes more challenging with nearly 16,000 students. Just as we recognized the need for more classrooms, housing and parking to accommodate our growth, we recognize the need for a systematic approach for academic support programs to ensure our students and faculty can realize the full opportunities of engagement. The OUE will have responsibility for organizing and conducting elements of the first year experience such as academic aspects of Welcome Week, summer enrichment programs, and academic success workshops. An OUE Advisory Committee to the interim director will consist of the chairs of the Academic Senate Committees on Educational Policy, Preparatory Education, and Undergraduate Council; two additional Academic Senate members; two representatives from student government and other representatives from the colleges and campus administration.

I graduated from UCLA and I have worked in a research lab at UCR for the past year. UCR is a much better school than rumors led me to believe. However, I was literally shocked and appalled by the classroom conduct of the students when I sat in on some classes. People weren't just IM'ing and surfing the net (benign things that might piss off a professor, but doesn't affect the students around them), but they were actually talking -- loudly -- to such an extent that it was very difficult to listen to the professor and nearly impossible to absorb any information. I think you can get a good education at UCR, but you will be surrounded by unmotivated people. If you end up going there, I would suggest sitting in the front.

About prestige, I think having a degree from UCLA helped me. If it were only based on straight GPA numbers, without taking the school into account, I would have been in trouble. I don't think I would have gotten interviews or an acceptance with a 3.0 science from San Diego State for example.

you trippin' so if you want dentistry / something with focus thats heavily bio related
