can you stop this? This is the 3rd time you posted this. Like everyone said, dental schools are not our bicthes, we are theirs. Stop taking up server space.

Is USC hard to get into?

First of all you're not going to make many friends posting 3 threads in this forum on the very same topic especially when people have already replied in one of those threads.

Second and lastly, USC is uber difficult to get in I wouldn't even bother applying 😉.

...unless you have a 5.00 gpa and 64+ on the DAT.

Ignore dental neems. He/she is a troll trying to market USC's dental program.
Probably knows that USC's dental program doesn't compare well with the other California dental programs such as UOP, UCSF, LLU and their sister school UCLA.

Of course USC's dental program is easier to get admitted to compared to other dental programs throughout the country.
The high tuition price, the low board passage rate, Problem-Based Learning curriculum, the lousy neighborhood and the snobbiness/materialistic mentality of LA people make normal non-residents want to avoid that school. I even have a friend from Orange County who wants to get out of LA for dental school.

i think the admission woman told me that tuition there is 73 thousand. How can that be?

Such a ridiculous generalization coming from someone who doesn't even live in the area...

The only thing I agree with is the high tuition price. Then again, alot of schools cost about the same as USC (i.e. NYU, UOP, etc).

I don't think PBL makes USC easier to get into. That makes absolutely no sense. If you decide you like the curriculum they provide, then you go to the school. If not, then you can go somewhere else. PBL has nothing to do with admissions. If anything, USC has one of the larger class sizes and fills its class late. That might contribute to people getting in with less-than-stellar stats than say a UCSF or UCLA, but to say PBL causes an easier admission standard is just stupid.

As for board scores, a couple friends of mine at USC have already said that USC has a high passing rate in their boards and alot of students want to specialize, translating into high scores.

In addition, the neighborhood isn't that great, but there is much worse (i.e. Temple). It's what you would expect in any big city. As for the snobbiness and materialistic attitude, you should probably stop watching teeny-bopper shows to get your impression of LA.

If you want a REAL opinion of USC, talk to a dental student at USC. They will tell you what they think.

BTW...UCLA is NOT USC's sister school. They are two COMPLETELY different institutions. UCLA is part of the UC system, while USC is a private school. That's like calling UNC and Duke sister schools.

Very well said.

As far as how competitive it is to get into USC -- the class of 2011 had a science GPA of 3.57 and an overall GPA of 3.47. Their DAT scores were 19AA 19TS and 19 PAT. ~3,200 people applied, 575 were interviewed (orientation) and ~50% of the 575 were accepted. These are certainly not the best admissions stats in the country, but they are a far cry from mediocrity. In fact, I would say USC is competitive with some of the programs in CA.

Kahunadentist (let's just call you the "inexperienced pre-dental newbie") I would certainly get your facts straight before you starting running your mouth like a hotshot.

I've only interviewed at USC so know very little but it does seem that if an applicant gets accepted to multiple schools, USC usually isn't at the top of their list.

Because of the high tuition, PBL rubbing some the wrong way, and the not so good area around the school, I think many top applicants opt for schools eleswhere, making it a bit easier to get into. This of course is not a reflection of the quality of education but more of what the average applicant wants in a school: low tuition, good facilites and a nice learning enviroment.

PBL and the $ made me think twice about going, but that's just me. Some people have super rich families and love PBL. USC would be great for them...plus thay have a great football team!!!

I for one would love to go to USC but thats just me.

I hate traffic but I would live close to school so that would be the only thing that would bother me and that is fixable.

I have to agree ... this person should actually live around USC and see how it really is. Granted, I'm not going to walk around at night by myself, but it's not that bad. Girls walk/bike alone all the time here.

Also, I have met some of the coolest people while living here. There is so much diversity in the greater Los Angeles area, and I have yet to come in contact with any snobby people.

The snobby people lifestyle I could see. I had a friend who moved from florida after losing everything in Hurricane Katrina, once he got their he had to get rid of all his clothes and buy all new designer jeans and what not. I dunno if thats because he was in the club scene constantly or if thats a product of LA.

You don't have to get rid of all your clothes and buy designer labels once you get "their" (lol). I think people should take everything they read on SDN with a grain of salt; after reading SDN I had a negative impression about USC, but after interviewing there I was very impressed. Wait for your interview and see if you like it.

I want to go to USC.

Where is my interview, USC?

The question is not "is usc hard to get into?", the better question is can you get out of USC once you get in?

Exactly, I am a Senior student at SC and foresee a dark future as far as graduating is concern. USC's reputation among the dental community has gone down south for sometime now. the schools is very disorganized; and with the money we pay, not having classes seem like an insult to me. But, you know...this was the only school that accepted me with my creepy stats. Yes, about 5000 students apply, but most of them withdraw from SC since this school is definitely considered a "safety" school and consideresd a second or third option among the pre-dents.

Is this school hard to get into you ask? DEFINITELY NOT!! Is the easiest school to get into based on my horrible stats (GPA 3.1 and AA18 PAT 17 TS 18 DAT). I blame all to myself since my lack of preparation during undergrad in both classes and preparing for the DAT gave me what I deserved (i.e. SC Dental).

Nearly all dental schools will take a few crappy students (for whatever reason). In fact, I have a friend in the class of 2010 at UCLA (not to pick on UCLA) who had a 3.0 and an 18 on the DAT, which is a far cry from the average student at UCLA. Even more startling, he was not a minority. Does this make UCLA crappy or easy to get into? No. This means, he got lucky and so did you.

It's very interesting that you went to USC because it was the only school that gave you a shot at becoming a dentist, and you complain 24/7 about how disorganized it is, the lack of classes (You do remember that USC is PBL?) and the outrageous tuition, when you wouldn't be in dental school if you USC had not given you a shot. I would be grateful because I'm sure there were 2,000 other applicants in 2004 who would love to be in your spot that did not get the chance.

I feel sorry for you. At least you are almost done. Most students I met spoke very highly about the schools their attend.

Its too bad you feel sorry for somebody who is attending dental school. No matter how much he whines he is still getting an education at a dental school and will soon be a dentist. I don't feel sorry for this person because there are i don't know how many other people who would gladly take that spot.

Not sure if it's hard to get in, but apparently, it's very hard to get out of. Many current students seem to be trying to leave, but the school won't permit it. Oh no, they're not having that!

Sounds to me that TypoDont is just trying to help you make and informed decision. Who better to ask than a person actually attending the school and a senior no less. Sure Columbia loves the school but he/she is just a freshman and maybe has not experienced the clinic yet. For all the pre-dents reading this i think it is good to get mixed reviews instead of having to just go with the flashy admissions brochures and how adcoms say their school is so great.

Just got my interview invite over the weekend via email. Don't lose hope, those of you who want to go to USC. My stats aren't amazing, just solid.
