Before I decide to apply to Vanderbilt I would like to know about the area the school is located in. I will be with my wife and 2 young children and would like to live (rent) near the school. If this is not possible how far out do we have to live to find decent schools, homes, surroundings, neighbors and churches? Will I then need to commute 1 hour each way?

Thank you.

I don't go to Vandy, but I've been here all summer doing research. Compared to most med schools, it's in a great location! It's actually about 2 miles outside of the downtown area, and is kind of a neighborhood all on its own. There are many parks, grass and trees (This impressed me most as I go to school in the middle of downtown Baltimore...ugh), homes, and decent churches. The public schools are still city (not very good), but there's a private school that a lot of employees send their kids, too. If I could go back in time, I would have chosen to apply here! 😀

no no not at all scott. I have lived in nashville for 21 yrs now and I am on my final year at Vandy undergrad. I myself have lived of-campus for 2 years. There are a lot of opportunities for you to live very close to campus. Most of these are condos or apartments but they are all pretty nice. The cool thing is that around this area I'm talking about there is a huge percentage of Vanderbilt faculty and students. A good portion of the professors I know that live here walk or bike to work everyday. It takes me ~25min to walk and 10min to bike to campus. And the places are affordable. The houses around here are pretty expensive though because it is a nice area and most of the houses and property are old so have majorly increased in value. But still, very easy to find affordable, comfortable, close housing. Good luck in your quest for Vandy. It's a great place.

Also, I didn't think about this one, but depending on what you want to do, there are places farther out where you could actually find a decently big, affordable house. These places don't have the advantage of the others (which are practically on campus) but you can find nice houses. And I'm talkin about a 20min drive to campus, not bad at all. I'm assuming since you have a family this might also be a viable option. The main area I'm talkin about is Bellevue, its not quite as nice as the other areas but by far the cheapest. And there are a dozen other areas not more thanb 20 min away but those usually get pricey, b/c afterall Vandy has 2 sides: 1)the dirty downtown/homeless-jimmy side and 2)the beautiful, expensive side. Take your pick I geuss

I would say that Nashville is a city moving in the right direction. The town seems nice whenever I visit and all the people who live there seem to love it. It should be a good choice.

I went to undergrad @ Vandy. It's a really nice area.
