I don't think this information is correct anymore. I volunteered at the CDA conference in Anaheim a few months ago and spoke to three current students at USC. I believe they said that their curriculum is now a hybrid, i.e. both PBL and traditional lecture-style. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's what I remember them saying...
I can only speak for how we did classes - the curriculum is ever-evolving to improve upon what we already have, so it may be a little different from what I say here. We had some traditional lectures and some directed case-based learning. In directed case based learning, we were given cases that pertained to the basic science class we were in that also had a dental aspect associated with it. There were specific questions we were supposed to answer about the case during our small group meetings based on the lectures and readings that they indicated. The faculty would come around every once in a while to check on us and answer any questions we might have. Test questions were based off of the questions that we answered in the small group sessions and off of the discussions and lectures that we had during large group sessions.
Did that explanation make sense at all? We're not really PBL, but we're also not really non-PBL. That could explain why they couldn't really give you a straight answer.
They just renamed it CTS: Critical Thinking SkillzzZzzzZz
But in all seriousness, our new dean (former dean of UNC Chapel Hill's Dental Program), is phasing out PBL/CTS, amongst other things that is really going to bring Indiana back to its 'ol glory Like our brand spanking new sim lab that we use all of 2nd year! (and last year our first year bench lab was brand spanking new, ousted the mandatory laptop policy, class of 2015 will have centralized computer systems installed for every chair by the time they are in clinic[hence the previously mentioned oust of laptops], increasing class size will increasing clinic size AND raising the last bits of $$$$ for the new building to be built. . .
Just reppin for my home turf over here. Sorry for the tangent
