Hi everyone,
So I am looking for some advice on what to do. I have recently finished scribe training and have been scribing on my own for about 3 weeks now. I really enjoy the job thus far and have already earned so much experience but I am having nothing but issues so far with the company.
To start, I signed my hiring contract as part time, working 2 shifts per week (I am still in undergrad). They have been scheduling me 3-4 shifts (9-12 hours) each week since I was cleared to scribe alone. Second, they have scheduled me outside my availability twice now (scheduling me 3 hours past my listed stop time, and scheduling me a day I said I was unavailable entirely). This has caused issues with school but I have tried to work around it because I did not want to cause issues as a new scribe. Third, every time I log into our online schedule, my schedule is changed from what it said previously. For example, schedules are posted on Mondays. I logged in Wednesday and noticed they had added another shift on. Then I logged in this morning and noticed they changed the times of two of my shifts. I really enjoy this job and do not want to quit but I cannot continue to have these things happen. I've been working around it as much as I can as to not be overstepping as a new scribe, but I cannot keep having my schedule changed without notice (or preferably at all).
I need advice on what to do. I really need (and enjoy) these clinical experience hours but all of these issues are interfering with school and life. How do I handle this? Do I quit or continue to let it interfere with other obligations? Do I start looking for a new job before I leave this one? I feel helpless because I felt really blessed with this opportunity but it has been pretty horrible so far.

Thanks for any advice

School > scribing at this point IMO. Find a better company.

Talk with your manager and be clear. They should not be scheduling you more than your allotted time or on days when you really cannot work. Just because you are a new scribe doesn't mean you should be taken advantage of. And I would just be clear that school comes first. They clearly need you since they are scheduling so much so I'd bet they'd rather fix your schedule than have you quit and have them have to start the hiring process all over.

You need to speak up. Sounds like your branch is poorly run. Could be the chief scribe’s fault or maybe some scribes keep asking for time off and are causing issues. Constantly Changing your schedule without informing you should definitely be brought up because that is not okay at any work place. And remind them you signed up for part time. You should let them know that if this continues you will have to leave.

I work as a scribe and we have never had anything like this. We get our monthly schedule two weeks in advance and asked if we can make a trade or pick up a shift if needed. Our chief scribe never assigns us a shift without letting us know in advance.

My branch is actually known for being poorly run. No scribes here are actually happy, from what I've been told. I talked to my chief scribe and she said she is not the one changing it, it's HR. At this point I'm not sure what to believe but I made my concerns known and I guess I'll see what happens from here. Thanks for the advice.

Put your big kid pants on....

“Ma’am, My schedule shows me working 4 shifts including a Thursday next week. Per my application I am not available on Thursday. That leaves 3 shifts and I am available for 2. Please let me know which two I should work. If I don’t hear otherwise, I will work the first two”

Yes.

And you might point out - if asked - that you would prefer not to quit, which would give them an even bigger hole in their schedule and force them to search for, interview, hire and train a new scribe.
