itouch vs iphone for 3rd year?

hi, for 3rd year, can i use an itouch on wards? iphone is a bit too expensive for me unless its absolutely necessary. the only worry i have is that the wifi coverage on wards may be too limited ? has anyone had experience with this? tks in advance.

or do i even need an itouch? though i feel like most ppl have said i do...

I have an iPhone but I feel I could get by fine on the wards with an iPod Touch. I use very little of my data plan--all the hospitals I've worked at have good wifi coverage.

having some sort of hand-held device on which you can look up drugs is absolutely required. you can accomplish this just fine with an ipod touch. however to use internet on it you might run into some problems because it might take forever to connect and some networks will require you to sign in to get on the internet.

the main reason i use my smartphone that requires a data plan is email. you'll be running around so much that you'll really need to check email on the go. it has also been useful for googling stuff and looking stuff up on uptodate while in a clinic outside the hospital. though i dont think a smartphone is absolutely necessary it is definitely worth it IMO.

You need a phone. Texting is crucial to bring people together at the right time.

You need a smart-device to look up drugs and to access the intarwebs (especially email).

Having two devices sounds pretty stupid, honestly.

Get a smartphone. Do you need an iPhone? No. Droids do great. Just get one device that people can call you, text you, send you an email, and that you can look **** up on. Can it be done with a book and a flip phone? Sort of. But why live in the past when you can live in the future.

Step up. Get the smart device. Join the, you know 2010s. Be a sheep. Get an iPhone

Get an iphone, I'm quicker to the draw with it than my android wielding colleagues. I often don't have wifi access(outpt rotations) or it boots you out and you need to click through the stupid privacy policy just to lookup something quickly. I use mine constantly. As already stated on certain services you will be texting/calling quite often to communicate with other students/residents/attendings.

To be honest, I rarely use my phone to look up anything, except maybe the occasional drug. Plus, sometimes its best to not pull out your phone on rounds because it can look like you're texting. If you want something to be able to look up drugs w/o buying an iphone check this out.

Also, you don't need an iphone to communicate with your colleagues, a regular phone works just as well.

tks all. it sounds like iphone is just a little more convenient and not necessary. i would rather not spend $400/yr on it especially since i don't really want it. i have a regular phone so texting/calling is not a problem. so i guess i'll go with an ipod touch.

For all of my third and fourth year, I had both an ipod touch and regular flip phone. It's certainly doable if you're on a budget but I really enjoying having it all together now. Bottomline, if you can afford it get a smartphone.

Also, I wouldn't want to be the only person on the team flipping through a tarascon while everyone else finds the answer much faster...just my preference. ipod touch for this purpose will do just fine.

I used a blackberry and had no trouble at all. Medscape app for drugs. Internet for everything else. Email is awesome. The new torches are really cheap. So I'd find a newer model since it's a smartphone and likely cheaper and definitely more useful than an ipod touch.

I would get a smartphone. I would not stick with a flip phone or have to rely on wifi. IPhone, Android, Blackberry....doesn't matter. But a smartphone with email access can be very important when you're an MS4 and interviewing - it's not unusual for interview spots to be completely gone within 3 hours of an email invite going out, particularly in competitive specialties. So if you're going to need a smartphone with email access in a year, why stick with a non-smart phone as an MS4?
