Today, I got a call from an agency I'm registered with, and they told me that a hospital in a nearby city needs a pharmacist to cover 2 maternity leaves, and the job could last as long as 6 months. While I didn't commit to it, it's at a place where I've heard for 20 years that I don't want to work there. I also wonder why they can't get someone to take a 6-month job without having to pay a fortune to an agency.

I guess I've answered my own question as to whether I want to take that job.

Update: I went ahead and declined it. I know a woman who works at that hospital (although not in the pharmacy) and she says I don't want that job. I've taken jobs at places where people told me were worse than being unemployed, and found out the hard way that they were right, and not just in pharmacy either.

i think you could do 6 months any place, and work is always better compared to sitting around all day

I dunno about that. If I was financially comfortable, I'd have no problems with sitting around all day or just hanging out all day as opposed to working. That's the problem with America, too much work ethic.

Eh, don't do it. I've turned down jobs like that before...there's always other/better stuff out there. There's a surplus, but it's not *that* bad.

I told them I couldn't do it.

Honestly, if it was anywhere else in the area, I might have considered it.

Update: This morning, a woman at my church who has worked at that hospital in administration for many years told me that this place got a new director a couple years ago, and things have really improved in the pharmacy. I like her, but I don't trust what hospital administration says about chief pharmacists, and am still comfortable with my decision. And the hospital still has an overall bad reputation.

Well, it looks like you've already made your decision. My thoughts would have been on taking the job....how badly do you need the money/experience you would get from the job? And are you likely to find a "better" job in the 6 months that this job would last? Even "bad" jobs are usually bearable for 6 months (exception would be if illegal things were going on or if you felt physically threatened.) I remember one pharmacy job that I realized my first day there I had made a bad mistake. But I stuck it out for 9 months until I found another job.

The money would definitely have come in handy, but I don't need it. Two years ago, I decided to leave pharmacy practice and at the time had no plans to go back, but now I would consider it under some circumstances. The poor reputation of this facility on every level influenced my decision to turn it down.

Update: The agency called me again yesterday. Guess what? That job STILL isn't filled. I looked at their website, and it's being advertised, too.

What does that tell you?

ditto...if you're busy working you're not busy starting sht

Earlier today, I was out running some errands and saw a tech I worked with many years ago. She had worked at this facility for a while a couple years ago, and holy cannoli, am I glad I did not take that job! Not a good place. 🙁

Why do you post this stuff? To validate yourself? do you think we care? Everyone knows the environment out there is bad. It's not like it used to be. You got out and I am very happy for you. You found something that gives you joy and fulfillment. Why look back? Remember what Satchel Paige said about looking back:

Don't look back. Something might be gaining on you.
