i wanted to share the good news of my interview at NYCOM with my old roommates from ugrad, who are law students and live together.
i told one of them while chatting online, and she was excited for me, but when i told her the name of the school she didnt exactly get the concept that it was a medical school.
i told the other in an email, and specifically said it was a med school. she then shared the good news with her roommate (the first one i told), who then got back to me to offer congrats. (got that?!? hehe)

her - i heard you got a med school interview!
me - yeah i did, didnt i already tell you this?
her - yeah you told me about the interview but i hear you got a med school interview now
me - i only have one, its at the osteopathic medical school
her - what is that?...

i havent even gone on the interview yet, and already im being asked whats osteopathic! they are both from upstate ny, and im a little surprised they dont know what it is, since DOs have a history of serving rural populations. but they are also law students, so its understandable that they have no idea that there were 2 medical degrees in this country.
they werent being derogatory by any means, they are happy for me, they just had no clue what it was i am interviewing for.

i dont mind explaining, i actually enjoy thinking up cool ways to explain it to someone who has no idea what it is. ive already had to explain it to my family.

i expect to get the patient who asks.. but honestly how will they even notice the difference? (im not trying to be shady or hide it) will it say DO on our coats or something?
but im sure once we are in the "medical community" people will be more knowledgeable, right?

yes it will show it on your coat it will say Chrisobean DO. I think that i have explained what a DO is about 100 times to friends and family. If you get in you better get used to the idea of explaining it. Good luck at your interview!

Just print her out NYCOM's rank list and say, "here is what DO's go and do." That should drop the smugness from her tone. Just think, in a few months you may be cracking her neck.

Being a DO or an osteopathic student means doing a lot of educating of the public about what we are and do. This is a very young profession, compared to the number of years MD has been entrenched in the minds of the public, and still is in most foreign countries.

The good thing is that it really cuts down on the number of egomaniacs that you are surrounded by, but the bad thing is that it can sometimes give your ego a beating when you are constantly having to explain your education and your occupation, rather than the instant reverence and awe with which MDs are always treated when one learns of their status << in a slightly sarcastic tone>>.

You absolutely HAVE to be willing and almost eager to be an ambassador for osteopathy if you go this route--otherwise the frequent explanations will seem like an intolerable burden. Unless of course you decide to just put "Dr. X" on your labcoat instead of "Jane X, D.O.", or if you decide to misrepresent yourself in the phonebook...but that's for another thread...🙂

Education the general populous, particularly with patients (if we do a good job) is the best advertising we can do as a profession.

Chrisobean,
I know you're excited about your interview, but you must remember, it is just an interview. Many applicants get invited to interview and about a half to 3/4 get waitlisted or rejected. Just because you get an interview does not mean an acceptance.

So don't get ahead of yourself as it seems you have been doing in some of your recent posts. Seeing as how this is one of your few interviews, you must ace the interview so you will get that acceptance. Don't worry about whether NYCOM can place residents in allopathic programs, whether it will say DO on the doctor coats, or how you will explain to patients what a DO is. Your priority should be to get accepted first.

I hope you prepare and do not take an acceptance for granted. Good luck and I hope you do get accepted. 🙂

agree with slickness.

prepare, do a mock interview (if you have the opportunity), and good luck.

Way to be encouraging...go get 'em Chrisobean and forgive your friend's ignorance...

well i figure explaining osteopathy to people is part of my interview preparation... i am trying to word my answer based on what i think is cool about it, which i think will help me in an interview when that question comes up. if i cant explain it to my dumb friends, how am i going to convey my enthusiasm for it to an interviewer? i was just curious to see other's responses.

i know i am not accepted yet... i am working hard to rock this interview and hopefully it will work out. "cautiously optimistic" has become my motto as of late.

but doesnt everyone jump the gun a little now and then? 🙂

thanks for the kind words everyone

Beaners,

Ignore Slick, he likes to give props to himself (have you seen his signature?) and apperantly to nobody else. You should be proud of getting an interview, there are people out there with amazing applications that never hear back from a single school. NYCOM likes something about you, so don't sell yourself short! Go get your Bean on...

Mistaking an interview for an acceptance would be fatal, but you're not doing that...you got an interview, and with that, you get this inner-confidence that someday, either now or later, you're gonna be a doctor. So go with it, pat yourself on the back, I think the advice of, you know, bunkering down and going crazy concentrating on your interview is rubbish. You'll end up stressing yourself out over an easy, and laid-back process. Just know your school, do some mock interviews, go in there and show them your inner-Bean, and you'll get in, no problems.

Confidence in this case is a wonderful thing, go in there with the mentality that if you just be yourself, you will get the acceptance.

Its kinda fun putting the word Bean into things...I got so beaned last night...I met this guy, he's sooooo Beany (that sounds kinda weird)...oh Bean! I just Beaned myself! hehe

Turkdlit, will you get off my back already. You have been jumping on my back since last year, and it is getting a bit immature.

What's wrong with my signature? If you haven't looked, half of the premeds on this site post exactly the same information about themselves either in my format or by posting a link to their mdapplicants profile.

Often times, people pm me for information about upcoming interviews at places where I interviewed at so I am more than happy to help them out.

So do not try to slur my name by telling other people false information about me. Get over it already. I congratulated you when you got into DO school. I don't give props to anyone? 🙄

You congratulated me, which I appreciated and thought to myself, "well that Slick is a bigger man than me after all..." Then I saw you followed it up with, "It wouldn't hurt if you believed in Jesus too..." or some tripe like that.

Plus its kinda sh*tty to go out and say, "don't flatter yourself, getting an interview is no big deal". Its undermining someone's accomplishment, and anyoe who does that on these forums should have it pointed out.

Firstly, I still believe that it doesn't hurt to be religious. To clarify, whether it be as a Christian, Buddhist, or whatever you would prefer. I don't see how that is offensive.

Secondly, what you quoted me as saying, I DID NOT SAY THAT. I didn't say an interview "was no big deal" or "do not flatter yourself." Look at my post again and you will see that. I told her that I know she is glad but that she must remember it is an interview and not an acceptance yet.

If you go into an interview with thoughts of how will I explain I'm a DO or whether it will have DO on our jacket, then it might mess you up. You can take nothing for granted even if it is an interview until you get that acceptance letter in the mail. I reminded her of that and in the end hoped that she did get accepted.

Why are you looking for ways to attack me? You would go to the point of putting words into my mouth in which I clearly did not say in my post? It is almost ridiculous man...

I was paraphrasing you genius.

And you know, from our past arguments, the whole religion thing...thats where this relationship began! You threw tht in there to get in the last word, or piss me off, or whatever. It was in there to be malicious.

How about this, every time I reply to one of your posts, I'll throw in something that I know you're against, and that I'm for.

So, in the end, I think getting an interview is a big deal, and should be prased. Support gay marriage.

I'm sorry if you thought my saying it doesn't hurt to be religious a malicious statement. Many of your patients will be religious so I hope you respect their views when you are a physician.

I think interviews are a big deal, and people who get them should be congratulated. I do think an acceptance is a bigger deal, and the people who get them should be commended.

I'll pass on your little game.

Hey guys, I think I may speak for a lot of people in these forums when I say that these forums are a place for people to ask questions, and help others with the med school application process. If you have to argue with each other, do it by PMing, and dont post it in the forums for everyone to read.

Thanks, and no hard feelings.

I agree and hope that this stops here. Turkdlit, if you have something to say just pm me.

turkdlit!!!! you need to chill out. I believe that slickness was just trying to get her to see that now is the time to get prepared for the interview. nothing else matters right now except selling herself at the interview. he is right, if you are concentrating on everything else, then when are you concentrating on preparation? stop pointing fingers and get a grip. I'm sure that chriso knows that I support her from my other posts, encouragement and wisdom is much more needed than accusations. I definitely would appreciate people pulling me back into reality if I got off on the wrong foot, please do. maybe you need to search yourself as to why you continuously have to point out the bad in others no hard feelings though just wanted to give some feedback!! 😍 😍
PS: the information in the signatures of (many) sdn'ers is very helpful, thanks!

Sistahnik, thanks for agreeing with me.

Chrisobean, just practice on common interview questions, and you should get good results. 👍

Beans,
I happen to disagree. I think getting an interview is more than half the battle. I agree that it is not an acceptance however, let me put this into perspective.

Only 21% of applicants were granted an interview at NSU-COM. Out of that 80% were accepted.

Therefore, it is more like 3/4 are accepted not denied (at least at NOVA). Keep in mind that interviewing cost the institution money and they realize the expense for the applicant. They must have seen something on your application and are interested in YOU. Many schools (view the interview feedbacks) don't have difficult interviews and most people respond that they felt like the interviewers were just trying to get to know them - as individuals, to determine if they felt like they would be a good fit. They ARE NOT looking to deny you. Good luck. You'll do great.

Looking at USNEWS, I found the following figures for NYCOM.

Interviewed: 720
Accepted: 566
Enrolled: 265

This gives a 78.6% chance of acceptance. Radman is right that getting the interview is half that battle. Now you just have to do well at the inteview.
