I have now been rejected from every school I applied to, pre-interview, and am now officially a re-applicant! Guess I'll be spending a lot more time in this forum this coming year.

My advice...don't spend too much time in here (WHISPERS: these people are crazy!). J/K. The most important thing to do when your MCAT/GPA is the mean or is below the mean at the school(s) you're applying to...is APPLY EARLY. I don't think your school list had enough variety...BUT all this is the past. I'm glad to see you've maintained your focus. You're going to be a doctor!

I'm sorry you had such a miserable (in my estimation) experience. With thousands of current medical students with stats worse than yours, its a travesty that you did not get at least an interview. But that's how silly this process is. And hey, at least you weren't on waitlists late into the summer, that's even worse! This will sting for a bit, but you'll get over it. Don't try to play the blame game, it doesn't help. People will blame you for various mistakes in how you applied, but take it with a grain of salt -- refer to sentence 2 of this paragraph.

I assume you are graduating soon. Find yourself a nice $30k/year research assistant position or equivalent, or a high paying job if that's available. You may consider oseopathic medical school, it is full of californians with your stats who were very unlucky in the application process as well. Do something productive with your time (not necessarily medical, although maybe a volunteering thing just to show continued interest). Best of luck. P.S. Don't spend too much time on this forum, it's kind of depressing...

I disagree...this forum, in particular, has the most positive, inspirational, determined, focused, relentless, hopeful, and SUPPORTIVE premeds than any other of the premed forums! 👍

So sorry to hear that tacrum! You seem like you've got a positive attitude about the whole thing though. Apply early next year and I'm sure you'll do fine. Are you still planning on doing a post-bac? I don't think it's a bad idea, or at least maybe take a few upper level sciences and get A's to raise that GPA a bit. Best of luck to you, whatever you decide to do! :luck:

Tacrum, sorry to hear about this. Guess I'll be seeing you in DC this coming year?

Sorry to hear that tacrum, good luck next time around!

Have you considered Ireland, Israel or Australia?

You need to get your GPA up and some research experience I think.

You know that's just what Dr. Peterson at UCI told me.

If I get into the SMP, then I'll be there. I'm not assuming anything at the moment though. I hope I get in. I also decided to go ahead and apply to Rosalind Franklin's program.

Yeah, I'm graduating in June. I'm planning on doing a Master's program like Georgetown's SMP (hopefully I will get into their program). I think that could be considered productive, although I'll be losing $30,000 instead of gaining it.

No, not really. I'm still trying for U.S. allopathic. I think I would go for D.O. before I left the country. I do really like Australia though.

Hey Tacrum,
Sorry you didn't get in this year -- but I'm sure you will if you stay motivated. I don't know if you should do an SMP -- it's a huge financial investment and your grades aren't that low. You may be ok with just taking upper division science at a state school (like 2-3 classes per semester) and getting a clinical research assistant job (since you say you're more interested in that then lab stuff). If you're in Cali, I recommend SF State. Anyway, that's just my 2 cents. I had to do both, a post bacc at state and an SMP to get in (but my numbers were worse). PM me if you want and good luck.

good luck tacrum!!! i'm so sorry it didn't work out this year, i'm sure you'll have better luck this time around.
i agree with ygreenst, although if you can swing it finanically than SMP could be a good idea. either way, having more classes or research experience will help you this cycle.
good luck to you and keep with the positive attitude!!! :luck: 👍

Tacrum,

I've seen your stats, I would be very surprised if you didn't make it. To me, you seem like exactly the kind of student they should be looking for.

Thanks. I just don't want to get my hopes up too much...again. I know it's only a Master's program, but I'm getting really tired of being rejected. I applied to Rosalind Franklin's program yesterday as a backup. Kind of late I know, but I'm pretty sure they'll let me in to that at least.

I do agree with you that the SMP is a big investment, but I think it would be worth it to have a more structured program that offers a lot of support. Really, I've had my fill of state schools and their upper division science classes. I don't know about SFSU, but at Cal Poly A's are hard to come by in upper division science classes as they only usually give out a couple. The Health Professions Office here was okay, but I basically had to figure out everything for myself. Obviously, that didn't go so well. Congrats on your acceptance by the way! You worked hard for it and now you're in. 👍 I'm hoping that Georgetown's program will give me the boost my application needs, although I realize I'll need to put in a lot of work too 🙂.

Obviously, applying late with less than exceptional grades and scores hurt you the most, but for those of us that may find ourselves in similar circumstance next year or the year after, what advice can you give? You applied broadly, you followed up, I just don't understand--given your circumstance how you could have done it any better? Any suggestions?

I'm afraid I can't help you with the multiple reapps. Hopefully I won't have to do that. The biggest thing I can say is don't take the MCAT in August. But for next year, that won't matter. Apparently the schools really, really did not like that my science GPA went down my junior year. I think that was a "red flag" on my app. Hopefully the SMP can help with that.
