It's September 15th and I Still Don't Have Any Interview Invites!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This thread is actually just a preemptive reminder for everyone to relax. You're going to be fine, everything's going to be fine, we're all going to survive the meat grinder that is the NRMP. Good luck in the Match, everyone!

Are you applying this year, Jack?

Do PDs work over the weekend or should we not expect any interview invites to start rolling out until next week?

I have already secured two interviews. YAY, I need eight more and I have a 95% chance of matching.

Do programs invite before getting the MSPE? I thought MSPE doesn't get uploaded/downloaded/sent/received until October 1st...

Depends on the program and field but yes, it is entirely possible to get invites before the MSPE. I got multiple before 10/1. Some fields have a later interview season and may not send out invites so early. I seem to remember my classmates applying to ENT didn't hear about interviews for a few weeks?

Hmm, interesting. Whats the verdict on Emergency Medicine, does anyone know?

There's a thread for that.

Also, virtually every program in every specialty will do things slightly differently. Don't try to play the "application timing game". You will lose.

Just...frickin...submit.

submit now, please. our first interview day is in October, and our last is in December. Another program here does not start until January. We are all different, so don't panic, but get your application in now.

Some programs specifically mention that "incomplete applications will not be considered" which apparently includes LoRs?

Yes. If your application is incomplete on the last day that I am reviewing applications, we don't consider your application at all. But you have no idea what my last day to consider applications is. Hence you apply, get your application complete as soon as possible. Your LOR's should have been written and uploaded long ago, but it is what it is.

I am an IMG with 2 questions: one general and one specific.

General: I understand that most programs interview 10:1. Suppose a program is interviewing for 10 positions. Is the procedure to seek to fill all 100 interview slots with AMGs and only if a few of those are left over to consider inviting IMGs? Or is only in the event of cancellations?

Obviously, each program differs.

Now for the specific question: My step scores were bad by SDN standards, but Step 2(242) was less bad than Step 1(210). When I check statistics to see if I have a chance at getting interviews the chance is poor with Step 1 but decent with Step 2. Is the reality somewhere in the middle, or is the Step 2 score completely useless due to filters? My goal is to match into psychiatry anywhere except NYC (non-traditional with a family to house.)

I hope it's okay to ask here in the "i have no interviews" panic thread.

It's impossible to answer your question because:

Obviously, each program differs.

Some might reject you immediately because of S1. Some might see your S2 and ignore your S1. Some might invite all AMG's. Some might invite all IMG's. It depends where you applied. The more IMG's in a program, the more likely they will consider IMG's

This is a great thread! Thank you all guys!

I have a quick question:
How do programs usually send invitations? I see that different applicants receive invitations from the same program on different dates. Do they list names in alphabetical order, or applicant IDs, or step scores? What kind of list do they usually follow after the filters?

I am asking this because I was wondering if it is possible to gauge how competitive you are by looking other applicants' interview dates.

Thank y'all!
Good luck on the match!

See...you guys don't even need us anymore.

Thank you for answering. I only applied to programs with at least 50% IMG and those with self-reported step 1 range of <200 or 201-220. I have to watch my budget so I didn't bother applying anywhere that I could find a reason that would be a definite exclusion. I even avoided two programs based on the lack of females accepted. (One was 0%, the other about 20%.) I made used a formula to "ROL" the programs. I know some people at my school do it differently but I can't afford to go on an interview to a program that has a less than 3% chance of accepting me.

Anyway, from what you are saying there are potentially some programs that may not filter based on the low Step 1. That's good to know. There really is no information available about how larger than average step score differences are viewed. I just hope it is not considered to be a deal breaker.
