Do you know when they usually send their decisions out?
How many out-of-state residents do they usually accept intially, and usually how many end up making it off the waitlist?
Has anyone emailed them and not received a response?

on the website it says decisions are usually mailed the first week of may...

the very nice lady said (confirmed?) that decisions should be mailed out mid-APRIL...!!!!!!!!! 😀 😀 😀

Dr. Izutsu said at the interview that they would snail mail decision letters out near the beginning of April. I am anticipating it anytime now. Although since I'm so far north (Canada) it will probably take a week to get here, like all there other letters.

anyone know the statistics of the movement of the waitlist in the past? that's interesting .. he didn't say anything like that to me, I don't think. I didn't know they interviewed non-US residents?

Dr. Izutsu said that they will pick the top 10 out-of-state and accept the top 6, waitlist the other 4. Once that is done they won't dip back into the out of state apps. If those 10 all decline, then their spots will be filled with in-state ppl.

That being said, the stats in the MSAR indicate otherwise. There were 17 or so out of staters accepted in that class.

As for Canadians, he told me that all LCME accredited schools are treated the same, so Canadians are essentially out of state applicants.

Keep in mind that the 17 OOSers you see in MSAR can include Hawaiians who moved away and declared residency elsewhere.

hawaii residents received their JABSOM letters yesterday...that means OOSers should be hearing today, tomorrow, and so on....

Hmm.. that's assuming that they make the OOS decision the same time as they do in-state, but from how it sounds, they are two separate parallel processes? Don't they rank all the in-staters and accept the top 60 or so and rank the top OOSers and accept the top 6?
Also, is it true they interview ~ 140 out of state residents? for 6 spots??


well, the numbers they have on the website are they interview 152 residents and 136 nonresidents. 152=> 56 spots, 136=>6 spots? that's less than 5% acceptance from those interviewed!

I have family in Hawaii but according to JABSOM that doesn't count for anything if you aren't already an instate resident. Hope the info helps and good luck!

Just so everyone knows, if you are accepted as an out of state student, it will be very hard to change your residency to Hawaii for tuition purposes. I wish they would have told me this last year when a new rule was passed. Most likely, you will pay out of state tuition during your four years there. Something to think about. I received the waitlist letter last Thursday as well. I am an out of state applicant with no ties to the state whatsoever. I called the office and they told me the usual story, "We do not disclose waitlist rankings." So here's to hoping a bunch of people jump ship on Hawaii next month. Any takers?

I'm an in-state applicant and won't be attending either. 33Gallon - where do you think you're going? Good luck to the out-of-staters out there. I know it's really tough to get in as a non-resident, so if you're on the waitlist, that in itself is impressive! I've already sent in my withdrawal letter, so hopefully one of you can take my place!

Hmmm...that is confusing. You definitely have better stats than me. Did you indicate in your interview that you didn't plan on practicing in Hawaii? Do you have clinical experience? If it matters a lot to you, you might even contact Dr. Izutsu and ask why you weren't accepted. However, with those scores, I'm sure you have some other good prospects.

Thanks for the reply localgirl. I guess this only further supports the fact that stats aren't everything... I did have some clinical experience (1.5 years volunteering in an Emergency Room) and ~40 hours shadowing physicians in hawaii. There must've been something else lacking on my resume; LORs or Interviews perhaps? Yeah I've already emailed Mrs. Nakamoto to see why I didn't get accepted and how I might improve. Oh well... at least I can save more money 🙂

Hey, that's me! I'm a "little birdie" huh? Haha Sorry I've been out of the SDN loop... been super busy at the clinic and with Merrie Monarch, the Olympics of Hula. 😀

That is correct, the final decision letters went out last week for Hawaii residents (2 of my MCAT buddies got bad news, 1 waitlist and 1 rejection!). So that means the letters should be arriving on the mainland this week. Good luck to all! And congrats to all those accepted, especially those from out-of-state (that is really impressive!).

As for me, I keep wavering between staying home (I did undergrad in Cali) or going back to Cali (USC, maybe Stanford). Quite different teaching styles and facilities, pros and cons on either end. Guess I'm waiting to hear back from their financial aid offices, but I'm not sure I'll get them before the May 15th DDay. I was accpeted back in December regular decision--very grateful for that--so that helped me narrow down other med school possibilities, esp those on the East Coast. Also, I recently received a letter from the JABSOM adcom inviting me to apply for the Weinman Fellowship, which is awarded to 3 incoming students for a full-ride for four years... now I definitely cannot pass that up if I get it! What to do, what to do...

I don't understand. In my opinion, you would be a strong candidate for Hawaii residents, at least you get you past the first 2 screenings. How did your interviews go?

Hey Kalenakai. You know, I felt like the interviews went well... however, maybe I was just dillusional 😛 . But anyways, I feel like I could improve on a lot of other aspects of my application. My letter of recommendations could've been stronger and perhaps I should've spent more time on my personal statement. Being a bit of a goofball, I might not have been serious enough in the interview. But... oh well... live and learn right?

Sorry to hear about that, 33Gallon. I still haven't received anything from the Weinman Fellowship, but hopefully something will show up tomorrow in my mailbox. *Crosses fingers for good news* So how does this outcome affect your decision for medical school for the next four years?

Thanks, 33G, I hope so too! It was really tough deciding between UH and USC *sigh* shoot, I'm still holding acceptances at both... but I'll have to let go of one very soon...

Hard decision indeed. Something that I really took into consideration was my intent to enter a field other than family practice or primary care. I think that if I were interested in either family practice or primary care, JABSOM would have been the way to go. However, I would like to specialize and don't feel that JABSOM is the best in terms of having the infrastructure and resources to get graduates into their specialty of choice. I know that JABSOM grads do get into competitive residencies, but I feel that especially for non-primary care residencies, a place like USC may offer more opportunities. This is the reasoning that eventually led me away from JABSOM, but I know that I will be questioning my decision for a long time to come.

I totally agree! In my heart I know I want to be some kind of primary care physician, probably in internal medicine. I know that JABSOM will be great for producing excellent primary care doctors... I can't say the same for those who may want to specialize. Hence, my decision to stay home instead of going to USC, aside from the big cost difference! AND, I'll also add that I went to get fitted for my white coat today, and then proceeded to drop off my size form to the Office of Student Affairs. The lady who collected it just so happens to be one of the administrative assistants there, also in charge of the Weinman Fellowship. I haven't received the letter yet, but she kind of hinted to me that I didn't get it, which is fine... I had my hopes all up, but I am still happy with the early acceptance and first-year scholarship! And I know that JABSOM will be a good (better) fit for me anyway. Best of luck to you too, 33Gallon!!
