I hope my question isn't too dumb 🙁 But is there a rule on whether to leave the buttons on a lady's suit jacket buttoned or unbuttoned during a residency interview?

I'm planning to wear a 2-button suit jacket and the bottom button is "fake" and only for decorations, meaning I can only button the top one. Should I leave the top button unbuttoned too then? I don't really know what is considered as professional or unprofessional in this buttoning business 😴

Generally you wear a jacket buttoned while standing and unbuttoned while seated. Although you can leave it buttoned while seated if comfortable.

I leave it buttoned.

It's hard not to stress over the minutiae - good luck and be yourself!

If you have to ask, you can't afford it. (c) Button the jacket, it is more formal and appropriate for the interview setting.

But seriously, you would be better off worrying how you are going to answer really tough questions interviewers throw your way. It's not your jacket that will get you into a residency position, it's your brain to mouth coordination. 🙂 You just have to relax. Nothing kills a candidate like them being too scared to answer your questions, or answering them in this thin, strained voice...

The reason I had to say it, people who worry about silly things like jackets are the same ones who get really, really nervous about everything else, and we don't need people who get nervous and stutter. Residents should be able to stand up to physicians asking tough questions to throw them off, to nurses getting passive-aggressive with them, and to some nerve-wracking presentations and projects. 🙂

Wear it whatever way your are most comfortable....if not you will look awkward.
