ya all of you florida/cali etc schools with the amazing weather! this winter needs to end now. I do have a question though, do you guys get distracted more? I have friends that go in Florida and they just study on the beach, im not sure I'd get much done! 😎

It's not all it's cracked up to be promise. It's actually been quite cold the past couple of weeks, down in the 30's here in SoCal. We had a psudeo-snow/hail storm earlier that was pretty freaky. I'm from Ohio and honestly I miss it terribly. I'd trade you places in a heart beat. I flipped out yesterday without even thinking about it because I say an Audi with an Ohio license plate. I started pointing before realizing what I was doing and that the driver was probably pretty creeped out. 😳

Went to the South Beach wine and food festival yesterday, it was a bit warm though ~85F. The weather doesn't distract me, it helps to make my life less miserable. 😉

We pay for it when summer comes. I'd take too cold over too hot (and humid) anyday. Only thing FL is good for is yr round golf, and I haven't got to do that too much with this med school thing 🙁.

uhhhh, you're how many hours away from the beach?

Having the beach closeby is my favorite thing about my med school. It's a great stress reliever and makes me overall more productive.

I'm about an hour away from Long Beach, Huntington Beach, etc. Is the weather in Cali really so random that its in the 30's right now here, and pushing 80 somewhere else nearby???

Should've come to Case! We have a beach! The... water's just... completely frozen... s'all.

😏

I sometimes wish I was up north where I didn't have any of the distractions. I can't study on the beach. I hate sitting there and doing nothing in general though. There is nothing worse than a beautiful day where you look out the window and see girls tanning in little bikinis, guys throwing throwing frisbees, dogs running around, people playing beer pong and you are stuck inside in your little bubble studying.

I try to go outside and then I get nothing done or if it is summer, am drenched in sweat. I've actually realized over years of living in both types of climates that my total time indoors is about the same, but the distribution of that time is different. During the summer in Florida, I run from my air conditioned apartment to car to school back to car to grocery store, etc. while trying to not get too sweaty. During the winter up north I ran from my heated apartment to my heated car to the heated school, and so on.

That being said, I am looking at renting a house by the water for third and fourth year. 😉

i live a block from the beach 🙂 Its pretty sweet. I dont take advantage of it as often as i'd like, but I definitely take advantage of more than any of my other classmates who live near campus (20 min away).

My roomie and I do beach study sessions sometimes. Just take my headphones and read for an hour or so. Gradually work on my tan haha

As another poster said, it does suck a little when you see other people partying it up and enjoying the beach when its warm, but its not that bad. I feel like i have the best living situation i could possibly ask for!

And whats even better is that I live on the beach, but at the same time we had a class trip few weeks ago that went up to a ski resort (2 hours away). We get teh best of both worlds!

I wouldn't be that jealous. I live a 2 minute walk to the beach, and my school is half an hour away. I see the beach twice a month if I'm lucky, and usually it's only because I went running on the beach for some exercise. RARELY do I get to go an enjoy the water and get a tan, and when I do get to sit in teh sand...it's with my Physio Costanzo book......sad

Good book.

Yeah beach is great but not in med school unless you can afford to live beachfront and enjoy the views. Grass is always greener I guess but it was not something any of my classmates got to enjoy very often

UTMB (on an island in Texas) is literally on the water and I still went in only twice all last semester. Granted I do believe seeing the sunrise come up over the ocean from my condo's tower is a great stress relaxer and a great way to start the day 👍

Well I'm in the Caribbean. One of the most beautiful beaches in the world is 15 minutes away and I've only been there about 2-3 times since classes started. The advantages are post-exams when you grab a couple drinks in each hand and just go hang out in the ocean.

I have noticed that the environment and weather play a big role in the general of demeanor, attitudes and energy levels of medstudents.

I live in an area where the beach is accessible and I've gone exactly 2 times so my whole time in med school.... Honestly, you'll be too busy. I barely have time to do grocery shopping, laundry, cooking, and gym. Beach is the last thing on my mind.

If I lived near a beach that would probably drastically cut down on my black ops time.

I don't care how much studying has to be done, breaks are always necessary. 2nd year was very busy but I would have made it to the beach at least once a month. On easy rotations 3rd year I would go every weekend.

Med school should not 100% dominate one's life.

can never be too busy to surf or snowboard..

I've probably averaged about 1-2 trips to the beach/mtns a week over the last 3 years. definitely the best anti-school. on psych i went surfing about 3 times a week for the entire rotation.. those were the days. going snowboarding tomorrow woot.

Don't be jealous of Florida. It is essentially a prison population. The american equivalent of Australia.

One disadvantage of going to a beach school is that there is a high probability that the person sitting next to you is wearing sandals. Therefore, their feet will stink. Then having the same experience while taking an exam is not pleasant...

That's funny never thought about that. However, our dress prohibits flip flops and the like. Girl still wear nice sandals though. No one has ever had stinky feet. Prob becuz if they decided to start their day at the beach there is no way they were going to go to class🙂
