Hey everyone!!!!!!!!!

I just got an acceptance letter from Howard!!!! 😀

BUT i already got accepted to Thomas Jefferson... So now it comes down to deciding between the two... One is highly accredited but the other is just too good of a school to put down even though its not accredited...

Im from Texas, so I definitely am looking forward to living up north, so they both weigh in about equal on that part for me...

PLEASE help mee!! Any pros and cons, ideas, suggestions, anything?!?!?! 😱

Thank youuuuuu

JEFFERSON!!! haha (but you know i'm totally biased 😉)

Good luck choosing either school. Both are good schools

I think both are good schools. Even though TJ is not full accredited yet (won't be a problem), it has the potential to be a great pharmacy school. Howard is OK, but from the Naplex scores, i would be a little weary. Both schools are in big cities, but i've heard Howard is in the Ghetto part of DC. Have u sent in ur $$$ to TJ yet?If so, are u gonna send anything to howard for them to save ur seat?

👍👍

Yes i sent in my deposit for TJU a while back, my seats totally confirmed there. And also sent out my housing form. I have till Monday to decide..... EEEEKKKKK

I did like the area of Jefferson much better then DC, and the school overall... but Howard is so "prestigious" and all..... -sigh- i can never make any decisions! I guess i better get better at this if Im going to be a pharmacist...

Is the school really that prestigious? Howard has already been on probation a few times and they have the lowest 5-year NAPLEX pass rate at 82.80%.

OMG! Are you freaking serious?!?!??! Ok. Now i dont even know why i started this thread.

Jefferson it is. Final answer. :meanie:

lol i saw this thread and kind of chuckled....yeah, Howard's been having accreditation issues (how many times has it been on probation? someone check) and has one of the lowest NAPLEX pass rate in the country.

Oh, my mistake. I thought Howard was on probation 2x but it was only once in 2005-2006. I was looking at the NAPLEX pass rate and I couldn't believe University of Maryland was third to last on that list.

Well if it's any consolation, University of Maryland has a 5-year NAPLEX pass rate of 90.91%.

EDIT: I see, the pass rate (from the link) was only from 2006.

Article from May 2006--a bit dated, but to give you an idea of the issues that faced the school. Based on the reinstatement of accreditation, it looks like these issues were resolved.

article said:
According to ACPE, Howard's pharmacy students are not progressing adequately towards their degrees — 75 current students failed to keep pace with their class. English says the university is responding by taking "strategic steps" to improve matriculation. Additionally, ACPE says there aren't enough faculty to properly deliver the school's curriculum once it is fully revamped and brought up to ACPE standards. Also, Howard's pharmacy school has inadequate lecture hall and classroom facilities and is also lacking a detailed statement of financial health. English says all the issues will be corrected, and notes that the revised 2007 fiscal year budget allows for "a phase-in plan to hire the additional faculty needed in the next few years."

One of the ACPE's most pressing concerns is a "disturbing" passage rate for Howard graduates taking the North American Pharmacy Licensure Examination (NAPLEX). To pass, candidates must post a score of 75 — the national average score for 2005 was 104.9 and the national pass rate was 89.2 percent. Though English concedes that Howard's pass rate for the class of 2005 was "below the national average," he declined to release specific numbers, as did the ACPE and the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, the body that administers the NAPLEX.

I found the pass rate from 2005.... it was 53%! To be fair, their pass rate jumped up to the national average in the ensuing years, but their trailing average is still 82%

English probably kept it a secret because of the 62 first time test takers in 2005 (not counting re-takers), only 53.23% passed the NAPLEX. Students at Howard have done a much better job in 2007 and 2008 though so they could be turning it around.

Hey RXRABIA, When did you get the Howard letter, and when did you interview. Was it regular or fed ex.

Got it on Monday this week, Interviewed wayyyy back in November. Regular snail mail.

I know very little about TJU but I would still recommend it over Howard. When I was interviewing at Howard a student told me that Howard is having to take in smaller class sizes due to their graduating rate which has become very low. She said that it was getting to the point where only about 1/2 the class was graduating on time and a large portion were having to repeat a year. I heard this from a couple of student tour guides so I'm not sure if they were embellishing or not. This was a major factor in why I chose to decline the acceptance.
