Jenny McCarthy and Oprah??

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Check out this story from Slate magazine. WTF??

These antivax people are idiots, and now they have Oprah promoting them too?? 😡😡😡
*arrgh*

I sent her an email on her website. I'm sure it'll get read. 🙄 I've never sent an email to a celebrity or website before, but I had to for that one.

It makes me sick!! I wonder how Jenny McCarthy's son's doctor feels having to provide healthcare to this woman's child who is literally threatening the lives of other children by spewing her nonsense. The CDC even sent a task force to evaluate these areas across the country that aren't getting vaccinated. Eventually the herd immunity effect is going to wear off and we'll have a resurgence of all the diseases we vaccinate against. I think I would much rather have well-child checks than see kids w/ hib meningitis daily. I wonder if we'll really let all of these preventable diseases come back-people will be begging for vaccines. I practice in an area where 30% of the population doesn't vaccinate and ND's and D.C's are more respected than MD's.

I definitely think we'll see outbreaks of these preventable diseases again in our lifetime. The lesson may be lost however since our supportive and ICU care is so much better than it ever was. But the costs will be astronomical, and there will certainly be deaths.

For a population that is so incredibly sue happy, Americans LOVE snake oil and quacks, as long as they tell people only what they want to hear. I don't get it.

Funny, I read an article a few days ago (or maybe a few weeks ago.. time flies) that said 2008 had the most measles cases in the US in over a decade...

From the CDC website:
linky goodness

"Measles is consistently one of the first diseases to reappear when immunization coverage rates fall. Increases in the proportion of the population declining vaccination for themselves or their children might lead to large-scale outbreaks in the U.S. Currently, Israel and a number of countries in Europe -- including Switzerland, Austria, Italy, United Kingdom -- are reporting sizeable measles outbreaks among populations refusing vaccination."

.

What's going to be interesting is what happens when one of those deaths is an infant that isn't old enough for shots but was exposed via a non-vaccinated kid. i.e. 6 month old dying of measles contracted from an unvaccinated 3 year old in the same daycare).

That'll be an interesting wrongful death/manslaughter trial. . .

Oh good point. I'd seriously go after someone if I could track the exposure down. People don't get that their choices affect everyone else around them. The same thing could happen with rubella and congenital malformations, and that really would be terrible.

Law and Order: SVU just did an episode on exactly this theory (obviously fictional). The episode was called "Selfish" if anyone is interested.

Would you fire a patient (or family) if the parents refused vaccination for their child?

Yes, and I know practices that do around here. But I'm not really cut out for primary care and there are many who view it their job to try and convince such a family with every visit. Not worth the effort.

I have a couple reasons. On a fundamental level, if you are going to argue with me about vaccines then we're not going to agree on anything, and if you don't trust your doc and your doc doesn't trust you, it's hard to have a functional doctor-patient relationship.

Beyond that is the safety factor. I don't want my one month old not yet vaccinated kid to get your kid's pertussis and I don't want my pregnant mom's to be exposed to your rubella in my waiting room.

That said I'm actually okay if you want to do a delayed schedule. I think it's silly, but at least you're getting vaccinated.

Wow, that's an interesting (and hard-core) link, thanks!

Interesting site.

For those who follow the link, please note in the FAQ's that the number of deaths includes (and is mostly comprised of) influenza related deaths. I know a LOT of parents who immunize their children but who don't do Flu shots. (flu shots aren't required for school and many people don't believe it to be a dangerous illness like measels or polio. Although H1N1 may change that opinion this year!)

first person that figures out how H1N1 managed to form as a combination of 4 different flu virus strains (two difference swine, bird and human) gets a gold start. :luck:

These anti-vaccine individuals apparently have never seen post-polio syndrome, a child with pertussis or a death due to tetanus. The most likely reason for the increase in cases of autism is that autistic spectrum disorders i.e. Asperger's are being diagnosed. The problem is that they were there all along just nobody was looking and it gives the appearance of increases in cases. The unfortunate thing is despite reams of evidence to the contrary people want to blame vaccines for autism. I truly hope that they change their minds of their own volition and not because we have outbreaks of pertussis and polio.

probably because it has a segmented genome and influenza is very common in birds, pigs, and humans. get people, birds, and swine together (like on a farm) and it happens

Well in the words of house if this trend continues and some of these diseases come back, invest in funeral homes

Did you know schools built specifically for the care of deaf children across the country are closing due to the eradication of diseases such as congenital rubella and Hib meningitis? Congenital deafness is so rare now, that these schools do not have enough children to enroll. To me, that is such a powerful statement about the success of the vaccine program.

I'm sure this is just a coincidence (my chiropractor told me so). We all know that vaccines do much more damage than good.

The sad part is that all sorts of pediatricians have been sued for "giving" these kids autism. But will Jenny McCarthy and Oprah be held liable for the deaths related to unvaccinated kids?

I've actually seen quite a few cases of pertussis over the past 2 years, most of them landing in the PICU. Thank you Dr. McCarthy.

Cracked is a humor website, a little dirty with some language most pediatricians probably don't use...but I was glad to see an article of this tone and content circulating on a pop culture website.

Went to the doctor show with Jenny McCarthy on it linked in the cracked article. I made it 2 minutes in before I decided I couldn't watch any more. The CEO of Generation Rescue thinks that the difference between the US and other countries in <5 mortality is caused by vaccines...?
