I got an email from Kaplan offering a job / job interview to teach the Kaplan DAT course..

Has anyone done this?

Does it pay well?

Do they hire for the online course?

Just looking for information, thanks! 🙂

I am curious how they get names to e-mail. I had heard that if you scored well on the DAT that they would get your info somehow and contact you, but I am not sure. Did you do anything to get contacted?

And from what I know, it is a pretty solid job. One person told me their brother made something like $28 bucks an hour teaching MCAT classes.

I was told if you have scores with 90th percentile or above in every category you can teach it.

I've taught for Kaplan. Apply through their website. You have to go through an audition, interview, and paid training.
The payrate for teaching depends on your performance in the training. It is a pretty good number.

Although $28 an hours is really nice, keep in mind most of the classes only run once a week for 3 hours. They do pay you any preparation that you have to do outside of class, but the pay for that drops to $10 an hour.

Regardless, working for Kaplan is an amazing opportunity and if you get the chance you should go for it. Keep in mind they are looking for people that are not only knowledgeable, but also people with a certain type of personality that can bring the "energy" into the classroom.

Last fall I was hired by Kaplan to teach DAT courses online. While I must say that the pay is good, great actually, it takes ALOT of hard work to get there. I started KTDP (Kaplan Teacher Development Program) and was completely shocked at how much work was required to pass and be able to teach. If you do not pass, they will take back the hire and you will not teach. I must hand it to them, they should have very qualified teachers based on their training program. To finish my story, I stopped the training halfway through because it was too much to handle along with my full class load.

The starting pay in my area in Iowa was $21.00/hour for classes. If your students give you an 85% positive feedback rate, you get a $10.00/hour raise.

Overall, great gig if you can handle all of the work and enjoy teaching.

I actually just recently started working with Kaplan. I had to apply on their website. I was not "sought after" by them.

They do hold a strict rule that regardless of what you're teaching, you must have received a 90% or above on the exam. That's not in every area, but overall.

The pay is good when you're TEACHING. However, when your preparing for lessons or training (you need to train and PASS training before you can get a class) the pay is minimum wage. At least that's how it is for me.

I would say its definitely worth it if you plan on tutoring for a while. That way, towards the end, you don't have to really prepare for lessons anymore and can just teach multiple courses at the same time and thus really rack in some serious dough. However, Kaplan doesn't allow you to teach multiple courses until after you successfully completed your first one. So if you take that into consideration, as well as the 5 week training period, it might not pay to work there for, say, just one summer or something.

I too initiated the process but found it way too rigorous. The training/focus on passing their class/having to give their speech wasn't worth it to me for less than a year of teaching.

What are the requirements to become a DAT instructor?

I've been with Kaplan for almost 2.5 years now teaching the DAT. Like other people have been saying, you need above a 90th percentile to apply. From there you have a 3 step interview process: presentation, interview, and training.

Your pay rate is determined by how students rate you. If you teach a certain number of students and at least 80% of them rate you as Excellent, your pay goes up. There is no cap on pay rate as a teacher, so essentially if you're amazing and hit Elite status, you can make some serious money.

The online courses are only for those teachers who perform very well in the live classroom. PM me if you have more questions.
