Job interview coming up, suit or no suit?

I have a job interview for a research assistant position in a lab. It will probably involve lots of PCR, RNA/cDNA conversion, culturing cells, etc. Would a suit be overkill or is it better to play it safe?

Sorry, this is my first interview for a full time job. I'm kind of new at this. Any advice would be appreciated!

Definately suit up. As long as you don't go Tux, you can't really overdress for a job interview.

As far as advice, act professional, but but don't be up tight. Seem like you are comfortable with yourself and relax a bit.

After that, just answer questions honestly and succinctly. Good luck!

I wore a suit to the interview for my first lab tech position, and my lab mates made fun of me for the next 2 years. But the important part is that I got the job🙂 (When I interviewed for another position 2 years later I was wearing shorts and flip flops)

We had one guy show up in a suit for an interview at our lab. We made fun of him after he left (our research is a bit messy and so the standard dress is maybe a step above what you'd wear to paint your house) but we ultimately hired him. By suiting up, he showed that he cared about the position and wanted to make a good impression.

One job interview I was at the lady told me the reason that she was sure I would get the position was because of how I dressed.

I am a girl, and I've only worn nice dress clothes for interviews. I didn't own a suit and it honestly didn't occur to me that I needed one as a college student. I got a full-time job in a hospital lab, chemistry internship at a Fortune 50, office job at a physician practice, etc. But if you have one, suit up! If you are post-college, then it's probably appropriate that you have one regardless.

Oh, and ask questions and seem INTERESTED in the POSITION. This is the most important thing you can do.

Haha, I've had a few job interviews, nothing medical related but they were for Macys, CVS, and for a Hospital volunteer program, and people told me at the time you don't need to dres up for any of them, but I always went up dressed up.

I am trying to get a better paying job (need to save up money for physics I&II in the summer) and I have a job interview next Wed. And though I doubt I need to be fully dressed up, dressing up can't hurt my chances, it will always (most of the time) help you.

I've worked in 5 different labs and all the employees, other than the PI maybe, have worn T-shirts and jeans. The environment is, in general, pretty laid-back from my experience. I would say you would look really out of place in a basic science lab wearing a suit. A nice button-down (and probably khakis if you want) would be more than enough.
