Ladies and Gentlemen,

How is the job market? In my area it is well saturated for MD and CRNA.
There are at least 5 applicants for every job opening especially for CRNAs.

This must mean those jobs in BFE are probably getting some interest these days. I know quite a few newly minted CRNAs who are going WHEREVER they can find work. Those looking to stay in a nice location are facing either a pay cut or off-shifts.

Yep. We have had more applications come through our door than any other year in the last 10 or so years.... a lot of applications from seasoned practitioners that did their residencies in top tier programs. There is no question the job market is tight. Gasworks doesn't seem to have as many 400k+ jobs that there was even 3.5 years ago when I started looking. I see a lot of mid 300K and a large amount of jobs even lower than that with 6 wks vaca. Got a buddy that took a job in a very nice location.... but took it at 275K.

Honestly, I feel lucky I got in the market when I did. That being said, keep in close contact with residency colleagues. They may lend you a hand some day.

Most of the residents affiliated with my Children's Hospital are not even looking for jobs this year. 75% are going into fellowships! 1 or 2 others apparently are not happy with what's available and are scrambling to find an open fellowship spot, at least that's the rumor.

I have some buddies who have good offers coming out of residency. Others have what I don't consider good, but are happy themselves with the offers.

Post on the private forum, you'll probably get some more detailed responses...and tell us more about the details of your area.

It appears some of the better employment opportunities this year are in locations 50-90 miles from metropolitan areas.

New graduates should pursue these opportunities as the trade-off of location vs. income is worth it in my opinion. Also, a high starting salary is very wise over a low paying long partnership track with the POTENTIAL to earn big money provided the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Obamacare.

Exactly what I chose to do. I decided to put my money where my mouth is. Going to a less than desirable location (where the CRNAs say anesthesiologists don't want to go) for a higher salary and the perk of doing my own cases.

If we are going to change our specialty, the change has to start with me.

👍

Definitely tighter....even for those who are fellowshiped.

I do my own cases in a high-acuity hospital, doing cardiac, peds, ob, vascular, neuro, and everything else. I left an academic job at a big, well known medical center. I only occasionally supervised residents, but never supervised CRNAs. Teaching was fun, but doing my own cases is funner. Supervising people you don't quite fully trust is more stressful than doing the actual anesthesia yourself. In my opinion, it is the way to go!

such a big sacrifice you are making the future anesthesiologists should all be so grateful 🙄
