This question is out of curiosity and not really related to me. On these forums, it seems like people spread gloom and doom about the job outlook of every specialty. Things like, "you need to complete 1-2 fellowships to maybe get a job in rural Wyoming" (obviously a gross over-exaggeration).

In particular, one of my cousins is a radiology resident (PGY3) at MGH. Very smart and likeable guy, though that can be said about many doctors. Although I don't have many specifics, coming from a top program (and assuming he comes off as smart/likeable), I was curious about his chances of getting a desirable job without having to do a fellowship. I'm guessing varies on a case by case basis depending on the relationships you made with attendings.

However, in general, how does the job outlook from a top program compare to the average "gloom and doom" heard about in general? Thanks!

You are basically setting the stage for people like radman, gonogo, and ballermd to blast the hell out of this thread.

But coming back to your point, I agree with colbgw2, a fellowship trained radiologist will have an easier time finding a job in a desirable location.

Thank you for the responses. I was just curious, and I'm assuming he plans to do fellowship.

So I work in a group in a desirable area. We need a neurorad. There is no need to advertise due to the dismal market. A few colleagues know several promising candidates who they know and will be interviewed. Cold calls start coming in from the leak of info and we may interview a few more. The MGH, Stanford etc. grad is not in a better position than one who happens to know my colleagues from Podunk U. There is a lot of luck involved in getting a desirable job these days.

From my side, look how much demand there is. Why offer what we offered three years ago? Lets offer 225k, employee position, and 6 weeks of vacation. We will still get tons of highly qualified applicants to this desirable metro. Attending doctors are not angels and will use the situation to their advantage.

OK, so you are in your mid career. You work in your desirable location. Your group takes advantage of new people which means more money for you and other partners. What are you really complaining about?

If your group has a starting salary of 225, partners probably make around 400-500. Unless there is something wrong with you, you should be a partner in your mid-career and you are in your desirable location. You have a job which pays 400-500 and at least 6 weeks of vacation and still you complain.

You either don't know what you are talking about or you think that hospitalist job is a piece of cake that pays 500K.

Boom.

Radman is such a chump. He's like the kid with lice that no one wants to play with.

I wouldn't say that. I would say his introspection is just really different (and negative). I don't know anyone who was deciding between doing IM --> Hospitalist vs. Radiology. They're so different it's not even funny.

Read some of your prior posts cbtk18. I understand where you are coming from constantly attacking me. What a huge investment of your time, money and effort going into medicine and radiology. Natural inclination is to attack instead of being civil and respecting my opinion.

250k in debt and starting radiology sounds like a grim future at the present time for you. Interest piling up, long difficult residency + fellowship (s), low odds of getting a job near where you want to live. Sounds like you are the chump if anything.

Hahahahahaha

I hope that laughter continues. Bet if things continue to deteriorate, it will be boo hoo hoo and radman was right all along as you read your 80th negative CT in the middle of the night for 10 dollars.

You are either a complete troll trying to pursued people away from a specialty that you are having trouble matching into or a disgruntled, aging attending that spends his entire day complaining on a medical student internet forum. I think the former is most likely. Regardless, both are equally pathetic.

In both cases you cite I am better off than you. 250k in debt embarking on a tough long radiology residency + fellowship (s) with poor job prospects, low return on investment, uncertain future for doctors and especially radiologists who are now treated like a commodity rather than a physician. Good luck. Check back on your post 7+ years from now. Your 250k debt will be 500k by then. You will live like your blue collar neighbor, You will likely be practicing where the only thing to do is to go the Walmart cafe or reading ER CTs through the night for peanuts.

You act like it's some magic trick that you looked up some of my posts from the past.

No wonder you're doing so poorly. You spend your entire day combing through Internet forums.

If you are an actually an attending (which I highly doubt) and you say that your day is so stressful and terrible, how is it that you spend so much time on here? If anything, it seems like being an radiologist is a pretty good gig if you can just sit around surfing the net all day.

Vacation weeks

You spend your vacation weeks trolling Student Doctor Network?
