I'm a PGY-4 resident looking to land a job in NE Ohio (Canton, Akron, Cleveland) upon completion of my residency. I have sent out quite a few emails to physician recruiters (hospital physician recruiters not external) and have a hard time actually getting a response. I've had two phone conversations where they just give a generic spiel about their hospital and say they'll reach back out in a few months. Largely most of my emails are seemingly just being ignored. I understand that we are in unprecedented times with COVID, however I did anticipate at least getting an email back stating they are still evaluating the current situation or something. My question is are physician recruiters listed on hospital websites/job postings the best route to find true job availability? Should I skip emailing and just pick up the phone? Or should I just be patient and expect more of a response closer to when I'd actually be able to start? (July 2021) Any other advice to get the ball rolling?

Your only solution is to come work at our hospital. We're the only ones still hiring.

But seriously, I would call the psychiatry medical director and talk to them about what's going on. They'll be able to give you a general sense if there are possibly open positions, or if COVID has caused a hiring freeze. We've seen very slightly reduced inpatient volumes, outpatient is the same or more, so there isn't a slow down for psych, as opposed to some other specialties. The other thing is sometimes there isn't a position officially posted so the recruiter will be less motivated to get back in touch with you, but the medical director will know if there is a staffing need and can stoke the fire of recruitment.

From my experience, internal recruiters are less motivated compared to external recruiters. I'm guessing when you collect a salary, it doesn't matter if you recruit or not. But when you get paid based on placement, you're more likely to do work to get people placed.

A few years ago (pre-COVID), I reached out to an internal recruiter. I never heard back. Then after a year, I see the same job advertised by an external recruiter. So the need was (is) there. The original guy I reached out to was just too lazy to follow up.

Hospital, Big Box Shop, recruiters can be bad. But its also been my experience that it is symptomatic of the organization as a whole - that silence you are getting is priceless. That just saved you a massive headache of working for a dysfunctional organization. The places that are better are the ones that also know how to have a functional recruiter who does their job.
