I am currently doing a Sports Fellowship and am looking for a job when I am done. I signed up on an online physician job search site. I have since been bombarded by recruiters via phone and e-mail with many opportunities. My question is this---what experience have people had with recruiters? In general, do they come up with opportunities that are good or do they have many undesirable jobs that went unfilled (and thus needed a recruiter to help fill the position)? Is it better to work with hospital systems and their recruiters or with national recruiters? Also, am I potentially suffering financially if I use a recruiter? (I assume we get paid from the same pot of money). Lastly, what strategies seem to work best to find a great job--internet, recruiters, word of mouth, direct communication with a hospital? I realize that people have different experiences but want to see if there is a trend or consensus. Thanks!

Hi, Spiveydog
I recommend two sources of information for your job search
1. A book called "The Ultimate Guide for finding the right job after residency" by K.Shaw, MD. Very clear, easy to read, well researched, written by a colleague who wrote down what he had learned during his job search. Amazon, $22, it's worth it.
2. My own collection of info, which I have posted on "A Physician on Job Search" on Blogger, you can find it by typing in the blog name on "Blogsearch"

Thanks for the advice. I ordered that book and will check out the blog. Anyone else with experiences with recruiters??
