Hi there,

I am looking for a new job. I am having immense trouble. I have an MA in art history, prior career as an artist, my last job was working in a hospital OR, and now I'm looking for a new job b/c I can no longer stand on my feet all day due to a foot condition.

I've been looking for a month, to no avail. I have sent out around 60 resumes and cover letters. I've looked on monster, idealist.org, other non-profit web sites, etc. I've had a few interviews, and the interviewers all said I was overqualified for the job and that they would not offer me the job b/c I would get bored and quit. I seem to be having that problem. My experience in the aart world seems to be bringing on these perceptions.

I am new to my city and have no networks. My MA program career office has not returned any of my phone calls/ emails for resume/ job seaarch help, and the alums I've contacted from my undergrad have been less than helpful.

What can I do? I am scared of being unemployed for more than a few weeks. I am totally willing to be a temp....but secretarial work will bore me after a few weeks and I'm looking for something more career oriented.

Thanks,

BB

First of all, sorry for your stress! This forum may not be the best job forum since we don't know where you are and location matters, but I'll at least give you this advice.

The market is really bad, so don't worry about the fact that you have been unemployed for four weeks. It often takes that long just to line up an interview.

That said, there are of course money pressures. This is where temping comes in. Temping is exactly that: temporary. You do it WHILE you are looking for another job so that you have some income. Yup, it's gonna be boring, but on the one hand there's a chance it could turn into something better and on the other it will pay the bills and reduce that unemployment stress. It will also allow you to not have to "settle" if you get a job offer that's really underpaid or not what you are looking for. Of course, you want a real career-oriented job, and you will get it if you keep applying, but in this market prepare for it to take a while. It's not you!

This is a very, very, very old post by someone with a long litany of troubles, who left SDN 3 yrs ago b/c they felt ppl were not supportive enough. I suggest we allow it to RIP.

Oops! Damn. I really do need to read the date-posting of the original post. Sorry!
