Is it too much to ask for a rec letter from a dentist that you're job shadowing from? I'm not doing much for the office besides just watching and learning and I don't know if its appropriate to ask for a letter of rec. Any thoughts?

did you assist or you only shadowed?

how long did you shadow?

does the dentist know you well?

if he doesnt know you well he might not write you a strong letter.

it sounds like you didnt really shadow for a long time. i dont think i can shadow for a long time. it gets boring just standing there.

if you really need a letter from a dentist then just ask him.

i dont see anything wrong with asking a dentist you shadow for a letter.

Start asking to do more, like setting up and breaking down stations. Try to operate the suction a few times. Chat the dentist up and ask questions. It's no big deal, lots of people start off 'just shadowing' and work into doing more. You can even stop at 'just shadowing' if the dentist has spoken to you enough to write a supportive letter of rec.

certain schools require you get a letter from a dentist you shadow, check some websites.

I see no problem with it so long as the dentist actually remembers who you are.

is that right that ADEA GPA is so much different that your actual GPA??

The ADEA has it's own method for calculating GPA. It can be found by searching.

Asking a dentist for a letter isn't a problem. I'm shadowing now and it's not boring to me. I like the office I shadow in very much and I would like to know how they set such a great atmosphere. They are also busy almost every day so there is a lot of stuff. Like people said, SOME schools require letters from a dentist verifying you shadowed. I don't think they will call the dentist to check if you shadowed. They probably assume you did if you get the letter.

If the dentist is kind enough to let you shadow I don't see why they wouldn't write you a letter. I got a letter from both of the dentists I shadowed last year. One even went as far as to call the dean of admissions at the school he graduated from to promote me ... lol ... (he told me AFTER he did it) - too bad it didn't work 😳P

is that right that ADEA GPA is so much different that your actual GPA??

Yes, I'm only on my third semmester and I screwed up my first semmester so it is haunting me right now. (F's in Biology and Psychology). I have retaken those classes and have straight A's since that semmester so GPA is on the rise. However, ADEA won't forgive me for those F's like KSU will. 🙁

Thanks for the input. I just started shadowing and I'm planning on applying this year so I needed to find a way to get a letter of rec within the next few months. I'm not really bored from shadowing so hopefully I can motivate myself to get involved longer. I think I'll ask in two months. Thanks.

just remember...he was in your shoes once. They know the rules of the game as much as we do so I'm certian he expects you to at least ask him for a letter. The dentist I'm shadowing told me after the first day "I know you want a letter and so here's my rules..." HE FLAT OUT KNEW I WANTED A LETTER FROM HIM THE FIRST DAY! I go in each week for a few hours at the end of the day since it's all I can do and he told me not to be in there too often. It IS a slight neusance (sp?) for you to be there but as long as you remember that you are good to go.

AND ASK A LOT OF QUESTIONS! DENTISTS LOVE TO TALK
