Question for the CA3s, CA4s and attendings. Where are people finding there job opportunities
1. recruiter calling
2. Web sites like gaswork
3. Program director or Chair being contacted by groups

Just curious where the majority of offens was coming from

Thanks

In my case they came from personal contacts. I used gasworks for information and interviewing skills. I would find a job that looked interesting to me and I would call them. I learned alot my CA-4 year by doing this and when I found the job I really wanted the interview process was second nature. I did not find that recruiters were of any help whatsoever but that may just be me. I wouldn't necessarily avoid them because they can come up with a number of opportunities for you but I found my 2 jobs by myself.

Where'd you do your residency Noyac? When did you finish?

This is the most valuable resource available when coming out of residency.

There is NO WAY one can acquire accurate info about group dynamics, pay, and security without it. Recruiters and people you "cold-call" frequently tell you want to hear. No way to know the validity unless you have a mole.

I was a LOBO, that is Univ. of New Mexico. I finished in 2001. I'll bet you and I have some mutual friends/contacts. I grew up in La. and have some friends that graduated from Tulane and LSU. They are (were) practicing in N.O. Slidell, Lafayette, and BR.

Noyac,

I think I know some people there but I can't be sure. Things have really changed in Alb. and I haven't kept up that well. But Alb. is a fun town if you like the southwest. Its a little crazy there however. I know we all think that the town that we did our residency in was the worst in regards to trauma, crisis management, case load and weird things but this was a truely crazy town. On par with New Orleans for sure. But as far as Alb goes I had a great time there. I even interviewed at Prespyterian(?) b/4 accepting my current postion. The weather rules and the cycling is great.

I gotta say that I was happy with the overall situation there while I was there. I think there have been some changes since I left, however. I will try to get a little more info. for those of you that are interested. The didactics were good, mock orals were great, case load exceptional. In NM you do it all and without a bunch of fellows there taking cases away from you. The hours were good I guess. When yo are on call yo work all night but that is when you really learn alot. I would caution any of you that are looking for a program that has fellows and that is too resident friendly. What I mean by that is that if you are always out of the OR in lectures and the call is easy then you are not going to be comfortable in a big busy practice and you might as well look for a cush surgery center job. Beware! New Mexico was not that way. You work hard but you also got some time off.
