I have been accepted into the John Hopkins Masters in Health Science one year program and can't decide whether to go or defer for a year. The program looks like it offers "med-school like" classes such as Virology, Parisitology, and Immunology as well as electives of your choice. It has a reputation for being academically demanding and is perfect for raising my low under-grad GPA from a 3.25. However, I did horrible last year on the MCAT(too low to list) but worked my ass off for 6 months and improved quite a bit on the latest August test (got a 31 on my last diag, but that is different from actual exam). Unfortunately, the physics and verbal section of the test seemed extra hard for some reason (which everyone agrees who has taken the test) so I am not so sure I broke the ever so coveted 30 threshold. It might be close, but I expect my score to be anywhere from 26-30. If I choose to go to the Hopkins program and later find out I scored a 26 or 27 (or worse) on the MCAT, I am screwed! So my question is, do you think I should go to hopkins and take the risk, or should I just apply for the next semester at St. George's or Ross? BTW, the only reason I am in a rush is I am 24 yrs old already.

Why would you be screwed if you found out you had a bad score while in the program?

I just graduated from the MHS program at hopkins and I think it was an excellent program. It definitely solidified my biology background and the professors are incredible. They DO know how to lecture very well here at this school, I can see why they have such a good reputation. I think it's a great program if you need to boost that academic background/gpa prior to medical school.

I think you should go this year and not defer it. But that's just me. hope that helps. good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I'll certainly consider it when making my decision. But just out of curiosity, what kind of an MCAT score would you need if you did excel in the MHS program tp apply to med schools?

I would say a 28. I went through the MHS program. And I got in. It really is the an awesome program and the teachers and classes are nothing but the best. I am pretty sure ist term is starting here soon if it hasn't already, so I would definetly do it. And really work hard, it will really broaden your interests and knowledge of medicine and my coursework at JHSPH has helped me tremendously in medical school so far.
