So I did a search on this, didn't uncover what I was looking for.

JPS has quite the reputation of being one of the bad-ACE Cowboy programs here in Texas. I was under the impression it was unopposed but after looking through their website they have a bunch of others (Ob-Gyn, Ortho, Psych, just to name a few)

Have these programs always been there? If not, have they affected the training of FM residents compared to years past?

Info from graduates/residents/students who have been through would be greatly appreciated.

They're unopposed in medicine. All those other programs you've listed have been there forever. And surgical residents from other non-JPS programs rotate through JPS. JPS FM residents rotate at Children's in Dallas (UT SW) and Cook (private children's hospital). JPS also has fellows.

JPS has a great program. I don't think any of those other programs interfere with the experience of the FM resident, but you should ask their residents. It's inpatient-heavy, just so you know. Make sure your philosophy fits their philosophy or else it won't work.

Great training to be posted to rural-BFE where you 'da man.....Would like to go there but don't like that kind of teaching environment (where my 'teachers' have only been doing this for 9 or so months longer than I and little access to attendings) and really don't like JPS as a hospital.

Others really dig it. YMMV. The residents I worked with were great and when the attendings from that program were around they were good teachers also. But I didn't see them as much due to the sheer size of the program and hospital. Busy place.


Remember, I was a third year doing other rotations at JPS at the time.

Going into Family. It's what I wanted to do when I went into medical school and where I really 'fit' the best.....

Applied at most all of the community based programs in Texas with
the exceptions of El Paso, Houston and Amarillo. Trying to find a good
place for the family while I'm doing my thing. They've been taking it
on the chin during my trek through medical school so I'm a little shy
about asking them to move to certain Texas cities. Nothing wrong
with the cities or programs themselves, just not a good fit for us.

IMHO - Check out Conroe, Tyler, Waco and Temple. All good programs
with the same training as you can get at JPS and seem like good places
to work. Plus a bit smaller so more one-on-one time.....

I would say the memorial southwest program is worth a look. The program is top notch according to everyone I talk to, and I guarantee you can find a nice area to live in for your family.
