Johns Hopkins

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
They are in final negotiations with signing Dr. Ulatowski, the current interim chair. He is such a nice guy and has plans to push Hopkins into the 21st century with improved technology.

The interview is very well organized. The hotel and dinner the evening before are wonderful. The interview day consists of 8 applicants and starts with a 45 minute introduction by the PD, Dr. Mittman. The residency coordinator is such a riot and is the most politically incorrect person I have met in a long time. This is followed by a short tour. Then, four 20-25 minute interviews are conducted. Interviewers include the interim chair, the PD, and two faculty members. You then attend lunch with the residents, which is followed by two very lame lectures on critical care and pain management. The two giving the talks obviously were forced into the role. Overall, Hopkins is an amazing place which will provide amazing training. Research is a priority and if you have done significant work, you are at an advantage to matching here. However, the arrogance, and quite frankly nerdiness, of the residents was such a turn off to me. Yes, Hopkins is obvisoulsy one of the top 5 programs in the country, but they did not have to reiterate this to me numerous times during our interactions.

wow, I'm sorry you didn't like it here. It is unfortunate that you got the feeling that residents are pushed into research.. that is definitely not true. As a resident, we are not pressured into anything, in fact many residents go into private practice. As for the residency coordinator being politically incorrect, I think everyone here would disagree.
It is too bad you left with such a bad taste in your mouth regarding Hopkins... I hope you find the best place for you.

For anyone one else interested in Hopkins... let me know.

I think that the previous poster considered the political incorrectness to be a plus for the RC. I know that I would also prefer someone with a sense of humor.

the PD is a pretty straight-arrow kind of guy, positive or not, he is not someone I would consider a "riot" but someone who is changing the program for the better and is supportive of each resident in the program.

Hi all. Please don't get me wrong. I think Hopkins is a wonderful place. I didn't feel that residents are getting pushed into research at all. As for the coordinator, she is such a riot but did make some off color ethnic remarks during our day. I don't mind this though because I have been known to make a few, or not so few, non-PC remarks in my time. GOod luck to all.
