Jr. College first?

I like the vast majority here am serious about a career in medicine, I want to be a surgeon!!! but I'm at a cross road here. My service in the military is just about over and after three combat tours I can finally finish college at long last. Here is my problem, I have to work full time to take care of myself and the family so I am leaning towards a general ed. or science based major in my local community college, then I plan on transferring to a state university to finish my bechelors degree, again, keeping my focus in science. After I graduate later on down the road and when I to apply to medical school will the path I chose to take to get there hurt my chances of getting into medical school? Has anyone tried this route if so how did it work out for you, or someone you kow? Any advice will be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance.

Dude...of course you can go that route...Just dont take your medschool prereqs at a cc and you'll be fine.

Thanks for the reply. The thing is that I haven't really heard of many people going to a Jr. College first then transferring to a 4 yr. to finish their bachelors prior to applying to med school. I'm 28 and I'm still in my freshman yr. bottom line is I don't want to waste too much more time before I find out this path was wrong.

I sort of did this but I didn't bother to earn a degree before transferring to University so my experience might not help you. When I got out of the military I went straight to community college till I had 30 credits. Once I had 30 credits I was able to transfer straight to my local University. I started working on my Biology degree after transferring and have been ever since. If all goes to plan, I will graduate next spring and enter med school in the fall. I also have a family to take care of so I have been working the graveyard shift full time since I got out.

When I first started down this path I was under the impression that Medical Schools look poorly on classes taken from community college so I wanted to transfer right away. Now I am not so sure and if I could go back and do it again I would probably earn as many credits at community college as possible. I think I would still do my med school science pre-reqs at the University just to be safe though.

Thanks it's good to see others going through the samething. I really hope all of your hard work pays off. I think I will shoot straight for the Jr. College degree as I will use it as a motivator that I am making progress. Please if all does work out for you and you do get accepted to a medical school let me know how it went thank you agin for taking the time to reply.

Yeah you should be fine. A good place to check out on this site is the non-traditional applicant section. You are bound to find someone like you who can give you advice on their experience with the med school application process.

I took this route...I started off at my local JC for athletic reasons and eventually received my associates and later transferred to a yr 4 to finish my bachelors. as someone stated above just dont take the pre reqs for med school at your junior college and youll be fine...i was accepted into med school this year just fyi so i def dont think its going to hurt ur chances!!!

I'm a former military spouse (didn't leave the husband, the husband left the army 😛), so I tranferred a LOT. Three of the schools were cc's and three were universities. It never even came up. Life happens, and most adcoms seem to understand that. Don't sweat it.
