Gpa/SciGPA: 3.6/3.7

DAT (AA/TS/PAT): 21/22/20

Modest ec's: a couple clubs, lots of research
Volunteering: 70 hrs so far
Shadowing: 50 hrs so far all general

So, my question is what else can I do to strengthen my app and what schools should I be looking to apply to this summer?

More hours. Get it to 100+ and ask some good questions about managing a private practice and learn a few dental tools. Get good LORs

Hey, It looks great. Do shadowing more general dentists like btw 100/200hrs. and also do activities to show your leadership. You will get at least 5 interview invitations if you apply at least 10 schools. and Apply early.

1. Get your Letter Of Recommendations ready.
2. Finish your personal statement.
3. Apply to about 15 schools. Look at their OOS ratio. Some good ones: VCU, UMD, MICH, ASDOH, UofL, Nova, Indiana, UOP, Columbia.
4. APPLY IN JUNE.
5. Save $$$ for interviews.

👍

The shadowing can go up, but I don't think you really have to hit 100 hrs. It will help but I know people who got in with 50-75 hrs (and lower stats than yours). The only schools I know that blatantly say they want 100 hours on their websites are VCU and Howard.

You are in really good shape, so soon you will need to change from the "omg what will I do if I don't get in" to "what can I do to make my life a LITTLE easier when I'm in." I would venture to guess you'll get in somewhere if you apply to enough schools, so don't worry about that (assuming you're not a prick at your interview). I will just be honest with you, there isn't much you can do to prepare for the amount of material about to be thrown at you...you just have to survive. One thing you can do-start learning how to wax teeth. Find a local dental school and try to get a student to get some teeth for you to start practicing on. If you can learn some basic dental anatomy and learn how to "manipulate" wax before school starts it will save you a tremendous amount of time. Lots of people with crazy high GPAs (for some reason I have yet to figure out) struggled really hard with the waxing concept. Hope this helps, and good luck to you. Don't worry though, I think you'll get in somewhere if you apply to 12-15 schools.

You have been judged a strong applicant.

Doc Toothache has some good charts around on SDN about the average DAT and gpas for different schools. I think you should look for those in the older discussions.

I'd find 15: with 5 where you're a little below their numbers, 5 right at their numbers, and 5 above their numbers. Obviously, it will not be surprising if you get into the reaches and none of the five where you're above their numbers, as the application cycle is crazy like that, but I feel it's good to try to take the averages into account when deciding where to apply.

Best of luck.

GPA and DAT are fine. The shadowing needs to be brought up to 100 hours to satisfy the requirements of certain schools. Otherwise you're in good shape. You don't need really need anything else, soft factors won't matter more than your GPA and DAT.

Thanks all you guys for reinforcing my confidence.

My main concern (aside from getting in) is getting the best price for schooling.
I'm a NH resident and I'm wondering what schools along the east coast would either give me scholarships (i know its pretty unlikely) or allow me to establish residency to get in-state tuition.

I hope to avoid racking up like 300-400k in debt.
So if anybody knows what my chances would be at getting scholarships for schools or which school would give me in-state tuition after the 1st year I'd be grateful for the info.

Buffalo gives in-state tuition and so does UMDNJ they're both state schools of NY and NJ, but they're a bit tough to get into. Scholarships will vary by schools and its tough for pre-dents to tell you where you might or might not get them.

You can also consider HPSP to reduce the amount of loans you'll have to take out.
