The fact that UCI is not ranked will not impact your future. I would have chosen Chicago of the four, then UCI second.

It was funny, when I talked to Gayle about SD, she said "I dont think anyone would tell anyone else to go to SD" and I laughed, because, well it was true. Everyone had pretty much told me Irvine was the better choice with the exception of some people that live in a US News or Academia bubble.

This is not the case at all. I take it you are joking. I'm just trying to give him both sides of the equation when choosing between the two CA schools. Its not a matter of which is an arm pit, its a matter of making the right choice for him (or her?).

I'm still deciding. I would still take usc over either. sigh..maybe I shoulda just gone to michigan (looks at weather report..no...i'm glad I didn't). I'll let you guys know, tryin to get the financial picture sorted out.... got some cash from ucsd, see wat irvine gives.

You can dispute FA packages too, if they do not agree.

I didn't even want to stay in CA and here I ended up with all these choices.

I would have taken any NYC school over Cali-- also Northwestern, UChicago, and alot of other East coast schools. If you've lived in Cali all your life its time to experience other things!

But the fact that my debt will be <100K is nice.

Haha. Speaking of pirates, here is a universal truth: If you include either pirates or ninjas in a movie, it automatically makes the movie 10 times better.

Take "The Last Samurai" for example. It was pretty cool but it was the ninjas in the movie (which didn't have much to do with the plot) that made it a very cool movie. If they threw in a few pirates for good measure, that movie would have been one of the best.

well, i wouldn't care all that much except for the fiance and family being here....the way i figure it, every city has something great going for it...if i didn't have ties here, i wouldn't mind seeing some of the rest of the country for a few years 🙂

yup...that was part of the reasoning behind hershey...his family lives like 30 min away, so visiting me would also mean a visit for the family, and holidays etc, so financially it would be easier, and time wise too.....

but of course, USC would be the most ideal situation because we live less than an hour away (during rush hour) and we already have a house and everything....so, overall, USC is my best bet....now if they would just let me in!!!!!

What are you talking about? It's 64 degrees and sunny in Ann Arbor today... save for a few T-storms in the forecast, it looks beautiful (mid-70's, partly cloudy, what's not to like about that?)... and it's Spring, the weather is gorgeous there right now and has been for a while, and everything is lush green unlike the depressing Cali brown for the next several months.... You don't think it's still Winter there do you? 😉

BTW I'm surprised that you turned down Chicago and UMich. If you want a Cali residency, those are great schools to get one with, and you'll have an adventure to boot living somewhere else... but I wish you the best of luck in your search.....

All this discussion, and none of it for what the user was asking about. It seems like you already made up your mind about where you want to be. I wouldn't get stuck on the rankings if it seems like you would be happier at UCI. I'm not sure there is enough of a difference between the schools as far as getting a competative Cali residency. UCI matches very well, and if you go there it just means that you are a lot more likely to match in Orange County of San Diego.

well, i mentioned it as part of an LOI, but i don't think they really care about this stuff, do they? at least i get the impression that USC doesn't really care...when i explained it to my interviewers at penn state they were very supportive and understanding....but i never mentioned any of this during my interviews at usc (i didn't think it really mattered to them, and anyway i was never asked anything even remotely related to my personal life, just a rehash of my amcas, because it was a blind interview, whereas at penn state it was open, so they didn't repeat questions already answered in my file)....

i don't know..i don't understand this admissions stuff 🙂

i don't know, i guess i just figured that they would think i'm trying to beg my way in.....or maybe i'd get some super feminist person reading my stuff and she wouldn't like the fact that i'd like to stay close to my fiance and family...but i will write one, however at this point i'm not sure if i should send in any more letters, or if they are already feeling like i need to seriously stop sending in letters, because i bet they aren't even reading them anymore....argh..i hate the uncertainty of it all.....having this looming potential separation is stressing me out a lot......it's like taking someone from everything they've ever known or loved and putting them in the middle of nowhere without anyone around who cares.....

and yeah, i would see how having a fiance in another state would be a disincentive, but some schools are more understanding about it...i explained the family he had there and how he had grown up there etc....

yeah, i totally understand that...which is why i'm not all mopey about getting into penn state...yes, i still want to go to usc, but i think i'm damn lucky to be going somewhere...i'm still excited to be going to medical school.....but, it's still stressing me out that i will have to leave my fiance and my house and move all of my stuff to another state....

I think its like talking about your race, sexual orientation, religion, etc. it can go either way depending on who reads it.
