ok I know the initial post for this was super old but i just have to comment.
I'm not sure why everyone is trying to give this guy moral support and encouraging him when he is a clear cut reason as to why they conduct interviews in the first place... his true colors are showing through and its pointing at introverted computer nerd, not a future dentist. Would you really want him to be your dentist?

Uhh????? So what true colors are great to being a future dentist? One that parties alot, because they are outgoing? 😕😕😕

Lots of people play video games. Half of my friends that went to dschool played COD or WoW or whatnot. They were extremely cool. Can't judge a book by its cover man. The dude just freaked out, hopefully he learned his lesson? No need to judge.👍

OMFG this is probably the funniest line I have ever heard, If I manage to get an interview, I am going to use that exact line (Granted the interviewer is younger). This is sooo Hilarious!

All Joking aside do some mock interviews and I'm sure you will be fine. Since you got an interview to one school, I'm sure you have interviews for other schools. Interviewing is a lot like public speaking, you must anticipate possible questions and come up with clear and logical answers to those questions. Interviewing well is a skill, and with more practice you should be able to hone that skill.

Thats soooo wrong! You know you have the right to ask for another interivew if you felt it was unfair. I was told this by the dean at my school. This sounds like it was unfair. If this was your only interview, I would bring it up with the dean at your school. The interviewer does not have the right to make a comment on your physical appearance.

Case Western was my first interview and I was suuuuuuuuuper nervous...

Interviewer:What do you do to relieve stress?

Me: (caught off guard) Oh. I just sleep.

Interviewer: Sleep, huh?

Me: (Thinking of something quick) Yeah, I like to dream and drift off into different worlds......................

Interviewer: Oookkk....

This is a classical example of why your answers should be kept short... as SHORT as possible. The initial answer of "sleep" as good, but when you tried to explain what sleep means, you kinda bombed it lol

Answer = yes, he is funny as hell.
Although being a dentist is a serious job, there are alot of interpersonal "goofyness" skills that a dentist should possess in order to be able to connect with his patients. Many people don't like going to the dentist, and when they do, its because something is making them (mom? tooth pain? insurance is about to run out at the end of the week? could be multiple reasons).... If your a funny dentist who connects well, your patients might start liking the dreaded dental visit.

Dentistry is one of the most interpersonal jobs that I am aware off, IMO, the more funny and outgoing you are, the better time you'll have with your patients and your profession.

I didn't mind the initial comment about my look at all, it was just small talk... until he completely misheard what I said and got all high and mighty about "judging people from their looks." I don't think he realized the ironic hypocrisy of that in relation to his early comment, even if I DID say that I thought he was Filipino (which I didn't!!!).

The fact that they picked someone who couldn't completely comprehend me and that this person was kind of a hypocrite definitely made me think less of the school. It's not my top choice so, in hindsight, I'm not too mad, but boy was I irritated when it happened.

You shoulda defended yourself right away. And said that you never mentioned anything about him being Filipino, but EVEN if you did, its not any different from what he just did to you 2 minutes ago. Reason I am saying you shoulda confronted him is because at that point, he already got a bad vibe from you, you couldn't have made it worse for yourself haha

After reading threads all morning making me fell that I'll never get to be a dentist (GPA, sGPA and DAT too low), I needed this laugh...

As you can see, I joined in April of 2008, so basically I just wasted two years of my life. Might as well finish this 4-year degree though, at least I'll have that to show.

Interviews: Yes, interviewing takes practice. Too bad undergrad STEM students are not offered “mock interviews.” Mock interview have been offered at business schools for decades. Anyway, you need to do research on the dental school that granted you an interview. Based on this research, ask questions that matter. I am sure there are other blogs that have dozens of sample questions. Three basic categories come to mind. Be sure to have follow-up questions. Have all your questions written down. Then, take notes during the interview. Write down all the answers. You have to be prepared, you can't “wing it.”

1.School policies on BIG things.
Getting really sick and having to repeat a year...or not repeating.
1 or 2 weeks off due to family emergency.
Running out of money.
Flunking one class.
Graduation stats & Biggest reason for flunking out?
Lab facilities: 21st century CAD/CAM & CNC or 20th century low tech
Tenured faculty vs. part-timers
Class attendance: clicker / no clicker, etc. Letter grade deduction for non-attendance.
2.What you want from the school.
When will I see my first live patient? (That's why you are going to dental school in the first place!)
Help finding a room mate or / & apartment.
Can you rent your equipment instead of having to buy it?
Can you buy your equipment elsewhere?
Can you take a 1-year leave of absence w/o penalty. (Not having to repeat a year.)
Are mentors / tutors available in case I have trouble w/a subject?
Do the dental hygiene and dental laboratory students collaborate on patients with the dental students?
Can you tour the facilities, sit-in on a couple of classes and talk w/several students?
What kind of help will you get to prepare for the dental board exams?
3.Post-grad help
Letters-of-reference
Help with loans, getting a job
Continuing education
Oral surgery track
Other post-doc tracks

Don't forget, each candidate is probably worth $100K+ per year to the dental school. Besides your tuition, the school also gets per capita funding from the state legislature. With the number of STEM students in the decline, each candidate is very attractive to the school.

LOL true true, but the whole thing was so surreal. I sorta expect interviewers to be good listeners, since each applicant only has 20-30 minutes to sell themselves. It totally caught me off guard. My brain was like "Is this for real?" the whole time.
