....... And I still don't know what I would like to do after graduation. I have worked retail the past 4 years and currently have a summer internship but how/when did you decide what you wanted to pursue? Whether it was retail, residency, hospital etc. currently I have a competitive GPA and will hope to keep it that way I can keep my options open on a residency on the future. But I am just looking for some input and personal experiences. Thank you!

You should get a hospital job and see if you like it. It will also help a lot with getting a residency.

The only way to know if you like something is to try it. So use your time in school to explore as many options as possible - through working during school year, taking a research independent study class, doing internships, doing rotations... you have three more years left, more than enough time to try different things and find one(s) that you enjoy more (or less).

I learned that I do not like research and I hate hospital, that I am OK with retail, and that I really like insurance and industry by the time I had to make the final call and go to the Midyear to interview for fellowships. 🙂 BTW the shorter your rotations and the more of them you do in the last year, the more opportunities you have to try different things.

Thanks you to both above posters.

Grats Jibby! I'll be moving down to Florida soon! I'm stoked

Don't stress about not knowing what direction to go in. I was all retail till the end of my second year. I ended up working as a staff pharmacist in a hospital for two years and am starting a residency next month. Seize all of the opportunities that you can. This will allow you to make the decision about whether to pursue a residency not your CV.

I just talked to a clinical pharmacist who might give me an opportunity to shadow this summer and intern in the near future with the Cleveland Clinic. I'll be a p1 this Fall. Hope I like it better than retail!

I'm in a similar situation hahaa!
I think I want to explore the academia route.

Does someone know what it takes to become an adjunct professor for pharmacy school (specifically pharmaceutics)? Or perhaps a pharmacology professor for a nursing or medical school? I was thinking about getting a masters with a concentration in pharmaceutics after I graduate...or would I have to go for a PhD for any of these positions?

This also interests me too. I believe you have to have a residency to work for a COP or COM. But you could be an adjunct at a state/ CC and teach pharmacology to nursing students. I know a pharmD who did this.

Ah, yeah I think my cousin did that. She did a PGY1 and I think she's teaching in GA now. It's been awhile since I spoke to her lol.
As for teaching at a state/CC, do you not need any other requirements (other than being a PharmD)?

The person I knew was just a pharmD. At a university I don't think you really can be anything other than a clinical adjunct since the majority of courses are taught by PhDs.

go shadow different pharmacists in different settings. I did this in school and it helped me narrow down the possibilities. Use your summer/breaks to do this so you get a real feel of what a workday is like when you shadow them.

I'm really surprised that no one here has already posted that there is no need to worry about what kind of job you want to do, since with the cut-throat competition, you will just have to take any job you are offered (if you are lucky enough to get one bwha hahahahaha!)

Other than that, the best advice is to pick a bunch of different rotations that will give you different pictures on how different pharmacies/areas of pharmacy are run.
