For the first time. It's microbiology of all things. The test was multiple choice, not based on that much material, but I found it very challenging. Minute details were tested on that were not emphasized in the book and she only mentioned in passing. Lots of "A and C" "A and B" "All of the Above" in the questions.

I have a 3.7+ science GPA with 140+ credits, so this is sort of a rude awakening. Feeling pretty discouraged right now.

Anyone have the same experience? How did you deal with it? I thought I was invivincible!

I am guessing I got somewhere between 55-60 %. I usually am about 10% above the average in my classes, often more... (not to brag).

I applied to Caribbean schools

Just aced my pharmacology exam this morning. Feeling invincible.

Moral of the story, you win some, you lose some.

Get over it. Move on. Learn from your mistakes and prepare more intelligently for the next exam.

Have you even received your test back?

Bad grades happen. If minute details are tested then you need to re-gear your studying strategy. If the details aren't on any of the material she provided try re-recording the lectures and listening to them.

Have you even received your test back?

Nope, but I can tell.

It was also difficult because we had 50 minutes for 75 multiple choice questions. I thought it was a little excessive for 50 minutes. Oh ****, I am turning into one of those complaining students that I have always despised. I'll shut up now.

:eyebrow:

Consider it early training for medical school, where no one is invincible.

Seriously, it was just one exam, and you don't even know your grade yet. Use it as motivation to prepare better for the next exam, now that you know how you'll be tested.

This is accurate! Learn from your mistake, move on and don't make the same mistake again.

I remember taking exams for online histology class that were 150 questions in 75 minutes which equates to 30 seconds a question.

But anyways on topic. Just take it as a learning experience and do better next time.

I was expecting a 100 on my last STATS exam and ended up with an 83 because of how the teacher graded (open ended) and now I know what to do for next time.

UPDATE

The average on the exam for 60.5 percent. I got a 73. The high was 87 and the low was 30. She said 74% is an A, so I guess I got a B+/A- according to her curve.

Sorry for panicking.

Why do these threads pop up every few minutes? One bad exam grade is not going to kill you! Toughen up! How does posting these kinds of threads going to help you exactly?

Yeah... this happens a lot...

I just slipped on the curb today, people laughed...but u no what i did? Jus got up, took it in, and continued...

Suck it up.

It's nice to hear other people have gone through the same thing. I don't have anyone to talk to regarding it.

That being said, I'll stop.

Really? Most people would just sit there right? Lol

Keep in mind that this is site is Super Duper Neurotic.

To be fair, microbiology is all about minute details. If you weren't expecting that going in you probably need to reassess your studying strategy.

I wish I knew what a curve was. Graduating senior and I've never experienced one. Lucky bastards.

What the heck- what an awesome curve....

I just took an O-chem exam, the average was 59%, I got a 74% (15% above average) and that is a B+ here

Also took a molecular Biology exam and the average was a 70%, an 85% was an A and everyone was like "What an awesome curve, I'm so glad she curved so generously" lols

what school do you go to?

What is it with these teachers "lowering standards" so people can get A's? An A is 90% and bove. Period. If you can't get that then you're unfit for medical school, probably drop out by second year or end up killing all your patients.

Try harder people! Try harder!!!

Except often times professors go by the ideal that college doesn't grade people the same way in which third graders are graded. Some do go by the 10 point system, while others make exams really hard (to the point where a high A is nearly impossible --or you have to be really smart), and then curve the grades.

Yeah well...it's survival of the fittest in these parts. If you don't make the cut, no matter how the system might have been stacked against you, it's nobodies fault. There are others who make it after all 😀 And it's not their fault that they are born smarter or work harder than you.../ sarcasm

Honestly, this thread symbolizes why I'm not too active on SDN anymore.

Oh ****, I am turning into one of those complaining students that I have always despised. I'll shut up now.

Oh god. Am I going to inevitably turn into a neurotic "I got a B+! Help!" premed too? Are all SDNers doomed to the same fate?

Only the radical premeds (85% of all premeds in SDN). Med students/residents etc. are experienced and mature to handle neuroticism effectively.

no..... it really shouldn't work that way. In elementary school (as another poster eluded to) they have specific milestones and goals. This is mostly because there is no established work ethic.

In (IMO) PROPER higher education, it must be assumed that there is always a subset of students who are working to the literal max of people within that educational level. These people deserve As. Also, professors will always have the ability to throw a test which will annihilate everyone (A "no hitter", if you will) and this has nothing to do at all with how hard the students are working. If you assume an encompassing spectrum of ability and work ethic among a student body, standard curves are the only appropriate way to test. It eliminates poor teacher/test writer variables and allows you to separate out top students. By your logic above, everyone who "tries" should be scoring 43+ on the MCAT.

Is reference to carib schools a good enough substitute for that last one?

I think the bigger question is why do people continue to think they'll receive sympathy on SDN? I don't necessarily think this is a good thing, but no one really feels bad for you about grades around here unless you're just absolutely at rock bottom. You could fail a class and people would probably say "It's just one class, walk it off" In some ways it should be expected given that there are a lot of people with rough grades and all other sort of nonsense that get accepted on here. It's all about perspective...

Anyway, sucks to hear about the test. I understand that feeling, but you have to learn to just take these kinds of losses, reflect on what you could have done, and try your best to put it behind you and shake it off. We've all been there at some point, even if we don't look like it.

I think a re-caliberation of the sarcasm meter is in order...

quite 😳

Dude, I have so many random factoids shoved in my brain right now I had to ask someone what the date was.... followed by "wait.. what month is it?".... followed by "thats '10', right?".

The world doesn't have enough caffeine in it....

I'll take that to mean you also forgot that I am a girl... At this rate you need a coffee by IV...

I think MuAgonist said this first, but KP, you really need to try to be happier. All that stick-up-my-buttness must make walking hard....

My bad... I think I have mentioned it enough times...it always amuses me when an SDN regular still refers to me as a guy

Hahahaha! i keep hearing about this Happy Chinese girl. Someone needs to link me to that thread.

Also, i suggest we make a "What I Want to Say to All Neurotic Premeds" thread, where everyone can dump their words of wisdom... That way when threads like this come up, all we have to do is link them to it...

It was a troll who just posted cookie cutter responses to threads and said something about being a happy Chinese girl in each post or in the post title. It was.... weird
