Just got my new MCAT score, how do I update Medical Schools?

Hey everyone.

Applied to around 30 schools.

Increased from 505 ---> 508

3.86 GPA

I updated it in my application already, should I send an updated letter about my score? Or call them?

I have one interview so far, hoping to get more even though I only increased my score 3 points.

You don't have to do anything --
But, if you're looking for an excuse to email an update, you have a convenient one.
Just use it wisely. You only 'get' one update or so before you come off as either desperate or annoying, so plan it like a marketing campaign.

Thank you. I will do this. Do you have any tips for making the best update possible?

how come?

Update only if you have a significant improvement in something. Actual publication of a paper you're an author of, Fulbright/other prestigious scholarship offer, significant GPA or MCAT jump. 505 to 508 is good but nothing to really write home about. Even a new volunteer gig isn't update worthy if you have volunteered the in past. Sorry, but unless it's something significant it probably won't help you much. You can still send an update but just know it's minimally helpful.

See below...

It gets updated automatically and immediately. You dont have to do anything

Like mentioned above you don't want to send any more updates than you absolutely have to. Sending an update simply to tell them about something they already know (new MCAT score) would be a waste of everyone's time. If you have something else significant you want to update them with in the near future, do that and maybe mention your new score if you feel like it. However, you don't want to bog down the admissions team with pointless emails/letters, as I would imagine it wouldn't reflect well on you.

Think of an update letter like one of those 'help line' assists you get on a quiz show. You only get one (per school) so don't use it foolishly. Use it when you really need it to get you over the hump.

Q. Will an email informing a school about your new MCAT get you over the hump?
A. Only if your application was already in the 'maybe' pile and your MCAT was your weakest link. Use it only for those schools that have not already invited you to interview and where that is likely to be the case. For those schools, at this point, you have very little to lose..
