So I just received a call this week from *** that I was accepted the WL, and hence I have to head to med school in about 2 weeks.

I am very very happy at the moment, but am pretty darn shocked and and not sure what to do.

I am absolutely burned out at the moment. I just finished my re-application and the MCAT retake that I had been studying for since January while working full time. So i don't know how I'll react to being "thrown into the fire immediately" so to speak.
Also, my father just lost his job about 3 months ago (unplanned of course), and I've been having to support my family until now.

I was wondering if it is possible to defer an acceptance this far into the year?

If they accepted you off the wait list they probably aren't looking for a deferment. That being said, if you ask they won't turn around and rescind your acceptance, they'd just say no. Couldn't hurt to ask. Good luck and congrats!

Most loving family members would be highly annoyed that you'd give up a long-sought med school seat to accomodate them.

Most adcomms would be highly annoyed that you had not withdrawn from their waitlist if you were not willing to accept an offer to join theiir next class.

I agree that if deferment is important to you just call them up and tell them that you have had recent familial hardship and wanted to know if deferment is an option. If it isn't, just emphasize that you still want the spot (assuming you decide to take it if deferment isn't an option).

just tell them about family hardship, how you have been supporting your family by yourself and this acceptance came out of nowhere and affected your plans for your family etc. the worst that will happen is they will say no, i dont think they will take away your acceptance lol

If you were not willing to accept the spot, then you should've withdrawn from the waitlist. Ask them if you can, if not, then take the acceptance and run with it. This is a GOOD thing that happened.
