My story - approximately 15 years at the VA, had 135K of student loans from professional school program (because I was stupid), and I had basically resigned myself to paying this off until I was basically an older adult. Although I could have done PSLF, my starting salary at the VA was so high I never bothered to do the income-contingent repayment thingy (because the repayment amount would be so punitive).
Fast forward to now - I learned about the new PSLF program a few months ago. Magically, I suddenly more than qualified, even though previously my payments were not qualifying (e.g., I had been making minimum payments on the standard plan for years), and I hadn't refinanced into the Direct Loan Program.
I applied, waited several weeks, and now, today, I discovered they processed my application. My remaining balance (around 80K and change) was now gone. Zeroed out. Done.
Other than my mortgage, I have no debt for the first time in my life.
Feels OK. A little like I got away with something I shouldn't have - but doesn't feel too bad.
