Just registered for dentaltown, man that place is depressing...

Is dentaltown where all the most discouraged dentists in the country go to vent? I just read through a couple threads and I've never read such dismal outlooks on the profession before. It literally seems like the general attitude is go military or bust. I'm sure it's not easy to make it in this field, but man hopefully the happier/successful ones are too busy to worry about posting on this website...

Oh no! I think you've found some bad threads! There are some great Townies who love dentistry and are very helpful resources. Like any group, when you get a bunch of people together, there can be a few that don't follow the norm, but for the most part, Dentaltown members are pretty postive. Here's are some good threads:

"I'm considering taking the next step in dentistry"

"Buying a practice straight out of school..."

I have shadowed @ five offices and feel like I've got some realistic feedback from dentists (range 1-15 years in practice)
They didn't paint all rainbows and riches but at same time they were no where near as downer as those you find on the dental town boards lol.

The economy sucks.... of course you are going to get some discouraged people. However, just be grateful dentistry is not like pharmacy, optometry, or law.

And for the record... dental town can be super helpful and interesting. Just keep poking around for awhile.

If someone is on the internet whining on a forum about their life, they obviously aren't pro-active enough to make things better. Find better feedback.

I semi agree with you... except for the fact that your statement would apply to all of us predents on SDN.

Thus... making all of us losers

i think pharmacy is still OK. its saturated, but people still find jobs on the east coast that pay at least 100K. Meanwhile law is a pure ripoff and is for losers lol sorry but it is. no jobs and tons of debt. meanwhile optometry isnt the best "bang for your buck" starting salaries are anywhere from 70 to 90K but why would you spend 8 years to make 70k a year? kind of weak when you think about it. Plus your gonna work with grandmas all day lol thats gonna drive you nuts!

hahaha you all read the post I made in DT?

yea after reading a few posts, I was like "holy sh it, this is a living hell''. but then as I read more and try to punch in numbers, 'those' dentists are going for 300k~350k a year or so. (that is what top 1% of this country is making).

If you wanna be crazy rich, def do a scholarship and follow their steps. you will be driving ashton martin in 3-4 years.

I am not driven by money. I want a decent lifestyle but I wanna make a fine balance. So I concluded that I will be just a 'poor' dentist for many years. oh well.

Plus, the fact that the economy is sooo bad and apparently a lot of dentists who were supposed to retire since 2008 did not retire cuz of stock market crash. So we have too many dentists competing for less public demand for dental care.

They are more concerned about more dental schools opening up than the economy tho. OH WELL, Life is a risk. You either take it and run.

Even if you shadow a dentist, he/she most likely will tell you only bright sides of dentistry and say some negativeness in a very positive way. Or don't mention anything bad at all.
It's anonymous. People can be bluntly honest and say what they think. Think about it. Who would go around tell people you decide to be a dentist just for money?

I agree that if you get a group of people together some people will always complain. I don't think there is any profession that guarantees personal success and/or riches. Nothing is guaranteed going into any profession, whether it be business, law, or a healthcare. I have however found that many dentists I have talked to have enjoyed their careers and have found success. I do not think the dentistry path is easy, but I think it opens many opportunities.

I was wondering if dantemac realized the irony of his statement, with those 1136 posts. In reality, DT represents, for the most part, the cream of the crop. They're the movers and the shakers.

Enough of this settling for less (i.e. oh I just want to have a comfortable living--that's lame), you need to reach for the stars!

I'm greedy and I'm gonna have it all.....

-Great dentist
-Featured in city magazine as Top Dentist
-Multiple practices
-Million dollar home on beach
-Vacation home in Hawaii
-Luxury cars
-Exotic high roller weekend car
-Trophy wife w/ pre-nup
-Model mistresses
-Owner of hottest night club in town
-Sh*tload of money coming out the wazoo

Of course that means some of you fellow dentists in my city will be bankrupt at my expense (someone's got to play second fiddle lol).

Let the battle begin! Good luck to all.

It's important to keep in mind that the dentists venting on Dental Town are ones that have had bad experiences and are therefore looking for somewhere to meet other dentists / vent with other dentists. The dentists who love their job and are doing well are not sitting at home at night looking for forums to complain about their job. They are doing other things. I am not trying to say that all dentists on Dental Town are "bad dentists"; just saying that it could be slightly biased based off of bad experiences. There are great dentists who are successful and make informative posts as well.

I don't really complain on here. I try to stay mellow and optimistic.

There are thousands of threads on DT. That seems to be the place to go to find and share info. Want to find what other dentists think about the latest ceramic or that hot new cement - go to DT, you'll likely find someone who has used it. I know when I first got my CEREC several years ago, DT was the place to ask a question or post a perplexing problem. My experience on DT has been very positive - sure there are always know-it-alls and nay sayers, but I think it's a great site, populated by folks on the cutting edge. Of course, I've only really used the technical threads, and quite honestly I,ve not just followed the new posts or the social topics, so I may not have a clear picture of what all goes on at DT. Once you really get into materials, techniques, or want advice on what brand of equipment is working well, give DT a shot.

maybe i'm an ignoramus but i'm wondering how the heck you all managed to sign up for dentaltown? doesn't it require that you are a practicing dentist with ada identification number? PM me if you don't feel comfortable posting your answer in the thread

There is an area for "Dental Student" when you register. Even though I am not a dental student just yet, I chose that because I will soon be one! 👍
