I feel like I am very late.. haven't even sent in my transcripts yet or started my personal statement. What kind of timeline should I set out to apply? What kind of advice could you guys give to students taking a year off? Should that be mentioned in the personal statement, and if so, what should be said about it?

Any other helpful advice to help me keep my sanity during this endeavor would be greatly appreciated.

You are not too late yet but definitely get things going. I would try to submit my application in the next week and start sending out those transcripts now!

The earlier the better. I applied very late (in August) and it took forever to get my stuff verified.

You don't have to mention it. I think the PS should really explian why you want to be a doctor and your journey to medicine. Or what experiences you have had that really drew you to medicine. Is that year you took off was very important in the process then mention it but otherwise almost every secondary will have a questions like the following: "if you took time off please explain what you did". So you'll be able to explain then!

If you don't have your letters yet, request them ASAP. I feel like profs are inclined to write better letters if you give them more time. I've watched kids hand over their PS and CV to a prof and say they need a letter in the next week, and the prof always kind of gives a dirty look.
