What DO schools and maybe a couple of MD schools should I apply to? How should I go about compiling the list?
  1. cGPA and sGPA are 3.25ish for AACOMAS
  2. MCAT: 514 ( C/P: 129, CARS: 129, Bio: 130, Psych:126)
  3. California ( I know)
  4. Not URM
  5. UC santa barbara
  6. A little over 200 hours as a safety auditor at the UCLA hospital. Worked on many different floors of the hospital then eventually stuck to ICU and ER only. Mainly observe safety stuff such as washing hands after patient contact, gowning procedure, blood drawing technique etc. Eventually applied to help monitor fall prevention and went floor to floor helping prevent falls by teaching nurses and staff preventative measures for patients with high fall risk. Got to know certain personal which allowed me to watch procedures, shadow doctor-patient interactions, take vitals/EKG, inventory patient belongings, body bag a few bodies, transport patients, help hold patients for procedures and blood draws, etc). But thats about it as far as clinical experience.
  7. No research 🙁
  8. About 40 hours of shadowing between, pediatric, psychiatrist, internal, and pain management. Still looking to do more shadowing.
  9. For about a year I've spent every Saturday morning at the pediatric department playing/ working/ and interacting with the peds patients. Get to see a wide variety of cases and really make the kids day. Also just started tutoring/mentoring an 8 y.o. boy in a domestic abuse shelter in a bad neighborhood.
  10. Currently working at a restaurant to pay the bills for the past 3 years. Just decided to apply to med school a little over a year ago.I graduated with a 3.0 B.S. in Chemistry and have been retaking classes and upper divs

The GPA-MCAT grid shows your chances for a MD acceptance are near 30%. However, that includes applicants with graduate degrees and those from states that admit a high percentage of their own residents. Unfortunately, CA is not one of those states. You could try some OOS private MD schools such as:
Quinnipiac
New York Medical College
Oakland Beaumont
Western Michigan
Rosalind Franklin
Creighton
California Northstate
any new private schools that open in 2018 (Roseman, Seton Hall, etc.)
It would be best to apply to at least 10 DO schools and you are competitive for many DO schools.

Faha Thanks so much really appreciate the input!

As far as DO schools is concerned, should I just apply to all of them and see what I hear back from or should I avoid some schools etc?

Your MCAT is above or far above the median for all DO schools. However, your GPA is below the median for most schools though acceptable for many schools. You do not need to apply to all of them but apply to at least 10. If you want to stay in the western half of the country consider these schools:
UIWSOM
RVUCOM (Colorado and Utah)
AZCOM
ATSU-SOMA
TUNCOM
TUCOM-CA
WesternU/COMP
Include any others in areas of the country that appeal to you.
