Good that you bring that up because that was the next question i was going to ask. Can you give some examples of the benefit packages that Kaiser would give?

One of the biggest items is the defined benefit pension. It's something like 60% pay for life after 20 years. Whether that'll continue the 50-60 years you need it to ....? Group health and disability insurance are the other biggies, especially if you and/or family have any health issues.

Pension plans are for suckers..... I would just laugh in their face if they tried to lie and tell me they are going to have a pension in place for me when I retire.

Bottom line, pensions are worthless. Companies promise pensions all the time and then cut and run down the line and screw over the employees.

Today's corporate world demands that you seek out IMMEDIATE compensation, because delayed compensation like pensions are fools gold.

Doesn't Jed Hill die a premature death in the movie "Malice" from being such an over-stressed, immoral ass?

so does that mean the regular per year salary is discounted because of this? I too would be interested in average salaries and how it compares to other private practice, community and academic jobs if anyone knows this info.. thanks!

you're looking at about 150k for a BE/BC general surgeon, first year with Kaiser. 2 weeks vacation the first year.

things get better from there, but you're not going to be making more than an average gen surg salary at Kaiser.

What's BE/BC? And how about those who are fellowship trained? Colorectal, surg onc, plastics, etc?
And by 'things get better', can you give us an idea of what you mean exactly?

What about those in Orthopaedic Spine ive heard some pretty high rumors and want to see waht others are saying?

Knowing nothing about Kaiser, per se, most of the published survey salarys put general surg in the mid 200's range as "average".

think about it....an 'average' general surgeon is not fresh out of residency, isn't he? (or she)

150K is the number.

BE/BC stands for Board Eligible or Board Certified. Better remember that one. Its a board question.

I don't entirely understand your post, but if it was in response to mine, I was talking about the non-starting salary at Kaiser referenced in the "things get better" part of your post - not disputing your starting salary numbers.

the HMOs make it a point to pay the community average for salaries.

the salary scale at kaiser slides up with year of post-grad experience, but you're not going to top out at more than 300k or so.

of course, fellowship get you some more salary, maybe 20k for vascular.

i'm not sure how much they are paying the plastics guys, probably not much more than vascular salary.
